"Just imagine what this Greek goddess will do now that she can job-hunt full-time," the magazine says. You can see Kanakaredes again on the CBS series Due South on May 11. Plus she's in New York News, the pilot for a drama series starring Mary Tyler Moore as a newspaper editor, which should be a strong contender for next season.

As for the rest of the soap actors list, it had: Tom Eplin (Another World), Lisa Rinna (Days of Our Lives), Monti Sharp (Guiding Light), Michael Weatherly (Loving), Tamara Tunie (As the World Turns), Sharon Wyatt (General Hospital), Scott Bryce (As the World Turns), Dondre T. Whitfield (AU My Children) and Jack Wagner (General Hospital, Melrose Place). R.D. Heldenfels is the Beacon Journal's television writer. He may be reached at 996-3582.

Among listeners 25-54 the top 10 were WONE, WMJI, WQMX, WKDD, WDOK, WNCX, WGAR, WNIR, WQAL (104.1-FM) and WZAK A year ago it was WMJI, WDOK, WONE, WKDD, WNCX, WGAR, WQMX, WNIR, WMMS and WLTF (106.5-FM). More radio In its early days TV was sometimes called radio with pictures. Now a local radio station is carrying TV without pictures. WJMP (1520-AM) has dropped its sports-talk format in favor of audio simulcasts of its TV companion, WAI (Channel 29).

The sunrise-to-sunset radio station has "tried country, oldies and sports talk," said Vice President Robert Klaus. "We even tried playing Take Me Out to the Ball Game 57,000 times and didn't get ratings for that." Klaus admits that audio simulcasts of old movies are a bit odd. But he added, "Most of Channel 29's daytime programming is music videos and talk shows, and that translates very well to radio." Star time Soap Opera Digest magazine looked at actors leaving daytime and came up with "10 soap actors who will be stars" in its April 25 issue. Topping the list is former Akron resident Melina Kanakaredes, formerly of Guiding Light. Kanakaredes decided to leave daytime after getting good notices for her prime-time performances on NYPD Blue as a reporter and lover of Bobby Simone, Jimmy Smits' comes on.

But other listeners gravitate to the show, and to plenty of other programs that some in the audience find offensive. Until the offended outnumber the admiring, the show will go on. But without me. Radio standings Country station WQMX (94.9-FM) kept its grip on the top spot in the latest Akron Arbitron radio ratings among all listeners 12 and older. But rocker WONE (97.5-FM) was in first place among listeners 25 to 54 years old, an audience prized by advertisers.

In the winter 1995 ratings for more than a half-million radio listeners, WQMX had its third straight win in the seasonal surveys, as well as being up from sixth place in the winter 1994 survey. The rest of the top 10, in order WONE, WNIR (100.1-FM), WMJI (105.7-FM), WDOK (102.1-FM), WGAR (99.5-FM), WKDD (96.5-FM), WMMS (100.7-FM), WAKR (1590-AM) and WZAK (93.1-FM). A it. And until they do, it will not go away. That applies to far more than the debate of the moment.

You don't even have to look at politics to encounter questionable radio material. Take Cleveland oldies station WMJI (105.7-FM). I like their music. My 6-year-old son likes their music. Unfortunately, in the mornings they have Lanigan, Webster and Malone, who are decidedly not for kids.

One morning I flipped on the station so my son could listen, and the first words to come out of the radio were "anal sex." Mahler requires enormous power from the eight vocal soloists, and these singers Bridgett Hooks, Margaret Jane Wray, Christine Goerke, Janis Taylor, Marietta Simpson, Kim Begley, William Stone and John Cheek came through forcefully. The men were on the opposite side of the stage from me, which distorted my sense of balance; even so, Kim Begley's radiance as the enlightened Doctor Marianus communicated strongly.

Janis Taylor's dramatic prqjectionl was also impressive, and the pre Ttf nw )r 1 Issue 10 "1 fL New Tax The renewal of the Building Fund will: We Make basic repairs, such as boiler, fire alarm and roof replacements. Broadway Akron, OH 44308 Cleveland symphony plays tribute to Faust By Elaine Guregian Beacon Journal musk critic Faust never had it so good as in Mahler's Symphony No. 8.

Redeemed from the depths, taken into heaven, and all that triumphant singing to boot: It doesn't get much better than that. At Severance Hall last night the Cleveland Orchestra brought in a small army of singers to perform the symphony, which is based on the story of Faust as seen through Goethe's version of the legend. Under the sure direction of Robert Shaw, the results from the nearly 400 performers were glorious and occasionally ear-splitting, as judged from a seat near the front of the main floor. Now 80, Shaw has achieved practically a cult following, based on his successes in Cleveland, Atlanta and internationally. Much credit is due him for pacing and holding together this massive work so sensitively, but also to the instrumentalists, the choristers and the directors who trained their own choruses in preparation of the concert.

Directors Gareth Morrell (the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus), Edward Ma-clary (Oberlin College Choir) and Ella W. Lee (the Cleveland Orchestra Children's Chorus) did a thorough job that paid off extravagantly well. At Carnegie Hall next weekend, by the way, this group will be supplemented by more singers, swelling the forces to nearly 700. That count comes close to the symphony's nickname, "Symphony of a Thousand," so dubbed by a promoter because at the premiere more than a thousand performers were involved. The two parts of the symphony are quite different.

The first, set to the old Latin hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus," features harmonies that strain at the boundaries of tonality. The violence of expression is surprising, given that the point is to praise God. The second part brings Not increase your property taxes. Issue 10 is not a new tax. In this massive kind of project the occasional quiet moments can be the most striking, and it was impressive when, say, a solo by concertmaster William Preucil could be heard over a restrained chorus. Of course, at the other end of the spectrum, the hail of trumpets coming down from high in the hall also had a potent effect. It's surprising, in a way, that such a somber topic can still go over so well with an audience today. That it did was a tribute to both Mahler and the performers heard at Severance last night.
