Northeast Louisiana is ranked 15th as a team. ning women's progressive league begins May 20.

The unior tourney is open to anyone, and will encompass divisions from 18-and-under to 10-and-under. There will be a consolation round, which guarantees everyone playing at least two matches The entry fee is $10 an event. Former Firestone High star Jon Treml, now in his Tennis 1 Bob I Nold "Attention Good Drivers AAMCO Announces New Springtime Hours" HALL OF FAME also Will be the site tor the state Volvo (formerly Michelob Light) Tournament Aug. 9-11. A lot of clubs are getting ready for this competition, which starts June 3.

Donna Finnegan, the manager at Spnngside Racquet Club in Bath, said her club plans to have women's teams in the 3 5. 4 0, 4.5 and 5.0 divisions. "And we're trying to get together a 4.5 men's team," she added. It is not necessary to belong to the club to play. Joanne Dlnle, the pro at Prestwick Tennis Club in Uniontown, said she was planning on having 3.5 and 4.0 women's teams, and thought the club might have a 4.5 men's team as well.

Barb Beattle, who does double duty as a pro at Halt of Fame and also at Portage Country Club in Akron, said the former has two strong 4.0 women's teams, and added, "I'm trying to organize a 3.5 Volvo team for Portage." Towpath has yet to decide what Volvo teams it will have, but Lois Bradford, now one of the pros there, said she thought there would be a 5.0 women's team. Cona said Parkview is stocked from top to bottom. "We can put together a team at every level," he said. "Whether other clubs can put together teams (enough to form a league) is the question." NOTEBOOK Prestwick will hold a junior tournament May 16-19, and its eve champion and runner-up. Sherry Harrison and Beth Bandi are not in the Parkview field this time.

Harrison moved to California and Bandi is no longer a club member. HALL OF FAME in Canton has two tournaments coming up early next month the Greater Stark County Open May 8-12 and an Equitable Family Tennis Challenge (all doubles) May 10-12. Entry deadline for the Open, which will be played indoors, is May 3 with a $9 fee for singles, $13 for doubles. It will include men's A and singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Tom Isaac and Dldona Lungoclu, both of Canton, are the defending A champions.

The junior portion of the tourney will include girls' singles in 18, 16, 14, 12 and 10-and-under divisions, and two boys' divisions 13-and-under, and 1 1-and-under. The Equitable tourney will have mother-daughter, mother-son, father-daughter, father-son, husband-wife and brother-sister divisions. The tournament is going on all over the nation, with Hall of Fame the site in this area. Winners advance to another site, and ultimately reach the national finals at the U.S. Open.

Cona said the reason Parkview outdraws the ADTA is simple. "It's the flexibility of the dates," he said. "We run it from April 3 to May 12, and people set up the matches at their own convenience. You have about eight days to play a match. It's not feasible to do that for a summertime tournament." Archer, of course, is the top seed this year with Carpenter No.

2, Steve Mazak (another ADTA semifinalist last year) No. 3, James Earl No. 4, Tony Catlin No. 5, and Bill Pollock No. 6.

All except Earl are eligible for and have played in the ADTA tourney. Earl is from Bedford. The top two women's seeds are Jeanne Tuttle, twice the ADTA champion, and Linda Falken-stein. Mary Halverson, Parkview's defending champion, is playing in doubles and mixed doubles but not in singles this year because she is working and felt it would be too much. Halverson is not eligible for the ADTA field since she is from' Kent.

Injuries and jobs cut down Parkview's women's field this year, but two good players who moved into the area are entered Sally Schaberg, who competed at Miami of Ohio," and Barb Bur-zinski, who competed for Purdue. However, Burzinski, like Halverson, is working and bypassed the singles this year. She also lives in Kent. Two other fine women players in fact, last year's ADTA mk In Gins and Dolls. Nathan Detroit was known for running the largest permanent floating crap game in New York.

It's time that Parkview Racquet Club was known for something, too the largest, permanent, most combative club tournament in these parts. It's going on right now, as it does every spring, and rivals the Akron District Tennis Association tournament in the quality of its field. In fact, it might be a little better than the ADTA field since some of its members come from Summit County, making them ineligible for the other tourney. And the ADTA should be a little envious. Parkview doesn't 'have to worry or wonder about who will show up.

The players flock in of their own volition. "I haven't seen a club tourna-; merit stronger in a draw," Park-View pro Rocco Cona said. "I'm sure the other clubs could go out and get a field that would be as strong, but this is the best one without me having to go out and pull their legs. "That had a lot to do with what Ted (former club pro Ted Sawyer) did here. We have competitive people here all the way down to the level." Parkview has 28 men entered in the portion of the tournament this year and 26 in the A portion.

The only place where Parkview's tourney might lag behind the ADTA's is that Cona himself doesn't compete because of his job there. He has won the ADTA tournament the last two years, both times beating Neil Carpenter, a Parkview member, in the finals. But and this is a big but former ADTA champion (make many-time ADTA champion) Jack Archer does play in the top men's section and is, in fact, the defending champion. He beat Carpenter in the final last spring, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, and aced him for the last point. Archer has not played men's singles in the ADTA tourney for years.

But last year, upon reaching 45, he did build up his game in earnest and went after national recognftion at that level. He made one heckuva start. He is now ranked No. 1 in the Western Tennis Association in men's English soccer club will fence out fans Associated Press Chelsea, an English soccer club, announced plans Saturday to install an electrified fence at its stadium to prevent rowdy fans from invading the playing field. Chelsea's chairman, Ken Bates, said a wire running along the fence 11 feet above the 'ground will give a sharp but harmless shock to any fans who try to climb it.

But the plan was given only cautious support by police and soccer officials and was branded as "degrading" and "dehumanizing" by some politicians.
