Kirby has gone largely undiscovered by writers and broadcasters. On the other hand, rookie in-fielder Rich Amaral of the Mariners is older than Kirby (31), which might explain why he has become more renowned.

Amaral, is batting about 30 points less than Kirby, along with California's Tim Salmon and Minnesota first baseman David McCarty are the leading candidates to become AL Rookie of the Year. "I don't even think about it," Kirby said. Besides, Kirby is just happy to get a chance to play in the big leagues after spending almost all of his 10-plus pro seasons in the minors. "Some people get noticed early and some later," he said. "Maybe I'm one of those players who is a late developer.

I wasn't born in California, where you can play all year around." Kirby grew up in Tabb, between Newport News and Wil-liamsport. He says he didn't really catch on to sports until he was 12 or 13. "But starting in seventh grade, I competed in everything, football, basketball, baseball," he said. "I was a little better in football, but I liked being around baseball HALL OF FAME more. The Orioles tried to get things going Tuesday night, playing a rain-delayed game with the Falls Medical Supply Angels. However, the game was suspended because of darkness with the score 9-9 after nine Innings. And that brings up a question to all of you stat league fanatics. How many of you anticipated Kir-by's quick rise to prominence? The man is batting .317 with 23 runs and 16 RBI in 123 at-bats since being summoned from Charlotte on April 30. There is nothing Kirby does" that someone else on the roster doesn't do better. Kenny Lofton has a higher batting average and is capable of stealing more bases.

Albert Belle, Carlos Baerga, Paul Sorrento and Reggie Jefferson have more power and will drive in more runs. Felix Fermin strikes out less. Lofton runs down more balls in the outfield. But if there's a way to beat a pitcher, Kirby will find it. He will hit to the opposite field or through a hole in the defense.

He never swings too hard and seldom gets suckered into swinging at a bad pitch. He hits every cutoff man. He always throws to the right base. He knows how to sacrifice bunt and bunt for a hit (he's 5-for-6), and he can steal (4-for-5)- In one respect, a 29-year-old rookie has an advantage over a 22-year-old rookie: He has played the game longer and in Kirby's case, that translates into acquired knowledge. A 29-year-old rookie might also have an advantage in making a run at the Rookie of the Year Award.

"It might be easier for Wayne, because people (the media) leave him alone," Manager Mike Hargrove said. "It would be great if he did win it. Talk about a rags to Kirby to play football exclusively, Kirby declined their scholarship offers, because he wanted to play baseball, too. "Baseball is a team sport, but you have to have individual pride as well," he said. "And you can't be afraid to fail.

Through the years, Kirby has learned these lessons well. Things have to fall just right for them to show their stuff, and more often than not someone else grabs the brass ring. This time, the spotlight fell to Odor, the AA Indians' shortstop, who went 3-for-4 and rapped the game-winning hit in a 8-7 victory over Harrisburg in an Eastern League game before 3,482 at Canton's Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium on Thursday that ended a 10-game home stand.

"I don't mind hitting down in the lineup," said Odor. "In fact, I think it's an advantage for me.
