View obituary and share memories at www.DesmondFuneralHome.com "Its not the years in your life but the life in your years that counts7 By Elisha Anderson Detroit Free Press Staff Writer Household items ruined by basement flooding lined curbs in Royal Oak as trash collectors played catch-up Saturday, removing rain-soaked debris from outside of homes across the city. People that would normally have put out about three bags of garbage instead had mounds of it, and it took 10-15 minutes per house to clear much of the trash. The high volume also caused trucks to fill up fast, which slowed down collections even more. "It's been kind of heavy," said 22-year-old William Montgomery as he threw garbage into a Rizzo Environmental Services truck near 14 Mile Road and North Campbell.

"Kind of tiring." He, along with his trash collecting partner, Michael Wei-senbaugh, 49, were working overtime Saturday loading wet carpets, pictures, couches, dressers, tables, luggage, doors, paneling, artificial Christmas trees, TVs, books, plastic bags stuffed full and sometimes requiring both men to lift and hazardous items like boards with nails sticking out and broken glass. The damage followed heavy rains on Aug. 11 that left thousands of homes and businesses with water damage from backed-up basement drains. "It is dangerous work," said Greg Rassel, Royal Oak's director of recreation and public service. Rassel said there were 60 trucks out Saturday in the city hauling away garbage, and workers from Rizzo were scheduled to continue collecting until 5 p.m.

Some of the trash had been sitting curbside for days before collectors could get to it. "Normally, we're not doing garbage pickup on Saturday," he said. "It's the only day we can play catch-up." The city, like many others communities hard hit by flooding on Aug. 11, fell behind because of the amount of trash, but is making "serious progress," Rassel said. Royal Oak is about three or four days be- GORDON E.

"In one week, we picked up six weeks' worth of garbage," Rassel said. Neither Weisenbaugh or Montgomery's normal routes are in Royal Oak, but they were brought in to help the city get back on schedule after the high volume of trash, most of it caused by flooded basements. Berkley and Huntington Woods had similar boosts in weekend trash service.

As Weisenbaugh made trip after trip from the curb to the truck, compacting trash multiple times each stop, he said he saw items thrown out that can't be replaced like pictures and said it's "hard to imagine" being in the position of people who lost so much. "I really feel bad for the residents," he said as he cleared trash from Huron Avenue. George Gillespie, 81, lives on that street and said he was affected like many others, getting about a foot of water. He threw out sofas and books but saved some things. He kept his master's thesis as well as his father's thesis and said he'll use Lysol on it.

"This is so massive that you've got to be patient," he said of the trash collection.
