If Americans bought one-half gallon of milk each week instead of two quart sizes, over 41.6 million pounds of plastic would be saved each year. Enough energy would be saved to heat and cool a town of 7,500 people for a year. 1989 statistics show that household dry cell batteries contribute as much as 88 percent of the mercury to the solid waste stream. Whenever possible, use rechargeable batteries to reduce garbage and levels of toxic metals. Another alternative is to purchase batteries with reduced toxic metals.

Environmental news of note: CARSON CITY The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee has approved $250,000 to clean up water and ground contamination around two wells in reno. The IFC voted Monday to provide the money for the Morrill Street and High Street wells, shut down in July with the start of tighter regulations on a known cancer-causing agent in drinking water. Westpac Utilities operates 20 wells in the Reno-Sparks area, and well water accounts for 25 percent of all residents' water. State and Westpac officials said nobody was endangered by the presence of perchloroethylene, used as a solvent in dry cleaning and a degreaser in machine-repair shops. The new rules call for no more than five parts of the substance per billion parts of water, and the level in the wells was seven parts per billion, state Environmental Protection chief Lew Dodgionsaid.

However, the Nevada state engineer says Wally Spencer won't show anybody where it is until he's guaranteed a big finder's fee. Spencer, a chemical engineer who worked on the solid booster rockets for the space shuttle, says he was using satellite maps to look for ancient river beds that might lead him to oil. "We thought we found a big pocket of oil but further studies showed it was moving so all our excitement went to pot because it was just water," Spencer said. "But it was so much water we thought we needed to do more exploration on it. Then we found it was a huge amount of water." Spencer believes there is more water flowing under the desert than there is flowing above ground in the entire Colorado River, which carries between 1 0 million and 1 5 million acre-feet of water a year, depending on rainfall.

"That's why he doesn't get a lot of attention," said Mike Turnipsecd, the Nevada state engineer. "Where in the rest of the entire United States can you find the kind of watershed that could sustain an underground river of that size?" Turnipseed said. His skepticism is shared by Terry Katzer, research director of the Las Vegas Valley Water District, the water agency for southern Nevada: "From a hydrologic standpoint, looking at the body of work the U.S. Geologic Survey has done over the past 50 years, it can't be true," Katzer said. He said Desert Research, a major research organization that is part of the Nevada university system, also says an underground river of that size is highly unlikely.

Katzer and Turnipseed agree that Spencer seems very sincere but they are concerned that he refuses to reveal the technology he used to find the water. "There's nothing in the science that would support his claim, nothing that's been documented," Katzer said. Spencer said he used technology similar to instruments used on satellites and space probes to map geologic features on Earth and other planets. Turnipseed says he wants to see some conventional proof. "I don't believe he's ever touched a bit to the ground," Turnipseed said.

"Let's see some steel in the ground and some water flowing out of it." Spencer says he has offered to pay all costs for drilling a test site if the state will give him a finder's fee and $2.49 an acre-foot for all the water that emerges. If he doesn't find more than a token amount of water, the state owes him nothing. "I'm not trying to break the bank. I'm trying to recover my cost and perhaps make a profit," Spencer said. "The main thing is to get the water to southern Nevada, California and Mexico to benefit some innovative testing of the site's geology, could provide some important clues about what northern Nevada was like during the final stages of the Ice Age (2 million to 10,000 years ago).

What brought such a concentration of creatures to this relatively small corner of the desert? By looking at the stratigraphy, or layers of earth, at the site, researchers discovered that the bones were probably washed down a channel and deposited in a low area where they were later covered with sediments and preserved. One theory suggests that drought may have brought the animals together before they died. "Mammoths, like elephants today, may have dug for water as their natural sources dried up," explains DRI's Dr. Stephanie Livingston, who leads the Black Rock expedition. "A watering hole created by a mammoth would naturally attract other animals." Near the end of the ice age, the massive lakes that once filled the Black Rock Desert and most of the Great Basin began drying up, robbing the area's primitive inhabitants of luch vegetation and life-giving water.

Dating the layers of earth around the bones will help the researchers determine if their age corresponds approximately to that time. So you think this drought is bad? Tens of thousands of years ago Nevada was changing from a wet, lush region to a desert. The animals then may have faced worse dilemmas than the modern creatures caught in the current drought cycle, say scientists who are studying the bones of several massive prehistoric mammoths found in the Black Rock Desert. The remains of the mammoths, as well as those of a large predator that may be a sabre tooth tiger, are being studied by archaeologists from the Desert Research Institute's Quaternary Sciences Center. A DRI team spent almost a month this summer excavating the scattered bones that have been coming out of the surface of the desert for the last several decades.

Local ranchers and desert enthusiasts, intrigued by the notion of elephants as part of the native Nevada landscape, brought the location to the researchers' attention. Earlier studies of the bone exposed on the surface revealed that the area is the resting place of three to five mammoths, including a very young calf and a large mature individual with an impressive set of tusks. Researchers have also found the remains of at least eight other kinds of animals. This variety, combined with Churchill County High School freshman Kevin Bell was a featured speaker during opening ceremonies and environmental panels throughout the World Congress for Education and Communication on Environment and Development (ECO-ED). The conference was held Oct.

1 6-2 1 at Toronto's Metro Convention Centre. His appearances were sponsored by Amway of Canada, Ltd. The ECO-ED was the first major international conference after the Earth Summit in Rio in June. Bell shared the podium at the opening ceremony with various United Nations officials who have an interest in the environment and various individuals from the private sector. The leaders were brought together to present insights on the environment, development, education, science and business from around the globe.

Bell, a recipient of the President's Environmental Youth Award, addressed the audience on the results of his science project to study water contamination and its effects on living things near the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. The results showed that plants and animals that Bell tested failed to thrive in the toxic water around the refuge. Bell, 1 5, is the son of Doug and Gailen Bell of Fallon. With the population of many migratory birds dropping, the National Audubon Society has launched a protection program enlisting its 5 1 6 chapters in Latin and North America. The program will find areas of endangered habitat and enlist chapters to help design protection schemes.

The society's program is designed to complement a federal program that recently began marshaling the work of several agencies. Loss and fragmentation of forests has cut some birds' populations severely, making them vulnerable to unrelated threats such as predators and disease.
