Consumer spending, which represents two-thirds of the nation's economy, totaled $4.49 trillion, up from $4.47 trillion in October.

Americans' savings rate savings as a percentage of disposable income rose to 4.2 percent from 4 percent in October. Analysts also were encouraged that income growth outpaced the spending rate in November. GAMING Bonds: Treasury bond prices finished a light prc-holiday session mostly higher Thursday. The price of the Treasury's main 30-year bond rose 3-32 point, or 94 cents per 1 ,000 in face value, while its yield held at 6.21 percent. But the four-week moving average of claims for unemployment insurance fell by 1,750, to 332,750. Analysts prefer to track the average because it smooths out spikes in the weekly reports. But staff-level personnel at a New York City-based underwriting firm, Donaldson, Lufkin Jenrette, said they've been busy preparing a prospectus on the issue. A prospectus describes in detail a proposed offering, listing company's financial perfor mance record and describing specific risks involved in the proposed offering. Asking that their names not be used, several brokers recently said they expect lots of public inquiries.

But so far there have only been a handful of inquiries, since the prospectus isn't ready to distribute. Before a stock is issued brokers can request copies of a prospec-i tus from underwriters. It was the fourth straight advance, the longest string in more than six years. "We seem to have a cycle where strength in spending has led to increases in orders, which have led to increases in employment and income, which in turn should lead to more spending and orders," Dederick said. "Everything was on the upstroke in November." Analysts said the data supports fourth-quarter economic growth exceeding 4 percent at an annual rate, although many believe the expansion will slow to about 3 percent during the first three months of the new year.
