Theo. Nelson, the valued cashier and correspondent for the manufacturing firm of Haworth Sons, was given a pleasant surprise last evening- at his home on North Main street, in honor of his 37th birthday anniversary and in recognition of his personal worth as a capable and clever official of the which he has been connected for a period of twelve years. The surprisers were the employes of the establishment, nmny of whom have been with Haworth Sons since they began to make Decatur famous as the centre of the check-rower industry. The men called upon Mr. Nelson in a body, Mr.

F. M. Cox, foreman of the works, being in the lead, and before Theo. could recover from his astonishment, he was placed in the centre of the group to receive the slight testimonial of their regard, which was formally presented in a neat speech delivered by Theo. Coleman, the firm's book-keeper.

The gift was a massive gold ring with a broad onyx, beneath which is engraved "1801-1888." Usually Mr. Nelson is a hard man to rattle, especially in times of political excitement, but the sudden appearance of his daily associates and their kindly act in uniting in the friendly offering, so overcame him that ho could but respond briefly to Mr. Ooleruan's address. He expressed his gratitude in a few words, his manifest embarrassment being more eloquent to the surprisers than any extended speech he might have uttered. Mrs.

Nelson, who had boon let into the secret of the call, made the stay ot the visitors quite agreeable and at a proper time served all with light refreshments. This fashion play, interspersed with well domestic scenes and charming music, will be presented Wednesday night by Minnie Mnddern and her com- jany. The New York Star said: Miss Minnie Maddern will remain for a while longer at the Bijou, the very name of the theatre seeming to have its peoial fitness for her. The story of Caprice" is simple, and is worked out in a very primitive dramatic fashion, but the ubstance of it is as true as it is old. Per- laps young wives do not leave husbands hat they love because they overhear hem doubting their own continuance in affection, and they do not come back a 'ear or two later so accomplished and lolished that their 'best friends don't mow them, but it is all probable with dinnie Maddern. She has all the una- ridged forms of wbmanhood, but in the ijuu form.

She sings "Maybe You Would, but I Doubt," with an undertone of pathos added to tho comic that is de- ightful. She plays with no consistent art, but with bursts of originality, individuality and inspiration. about a personal matter that they have no business to inquire about. I will not be interviewed," he exclaimed excitedly. These remarks accompanied by vigorous puffs on the cigar, which had no light When the reporter modestly suggested that General Sderidan's nativity was a question that the public had a risrht to Lave solved, in view of his possible candidacy for the presidency, it only added fuel to the flame of indignation. "I don't know where he was born," ha exclaimed, "and I won't be questioned about it. If yon want to find out, ask him." With this the Colonel strode out ol the room leaving the reporter in undisputed possession of the handsomely furnished office.
