Reno Gazette-Journal Wednesday, November 4, 1987 5D NBC on top; Titanic' sinks networks' Wednesday ratings Rating system has CBS news on top share. The rating is a percentage of the nation's 88.6 million households with televisions. The share is a percentage of the audience that is viewing during a particular time period. The people meter is a push-button ratings device that Nielsen says is more accurate than the old diary method. NEW YORK (AP) The "CBS Evening News" has won every week so far since Nielsen switched over to its new people-meter audience measuring system at the beginning of the new television season six weeks ago.

For the week ending Oct. 30, CBS had an average rating of 12.4 and a 22 share. ABC's "World News Tonight" had an 11.3 and 20 share and "NBC Nightly News" had an 11.1 and 20 NEW YORK (AP) NBC embarked last week on what it hopes will be a new winning streak to replace the 38-week run at the top of the Nielsens broken by ABC last week with the World Series. Syndicated specials foiled all three networks last week, especially on Wedneday night when an estimated one-third of the viewing audience tuned in the live two-hour broadcast "Return to the Titanic" in which artifacts from the sunken ship were displayed publicly for the first time. A syndicated Halloween special, "Search for Houdini," also cut into the network audience.

All three networks were hurt because of "Titanic." In the 15-market overnights, it got a 22.9 rating and a 33 share. "Houdini" had a 7.4 and 13 share, cutting mainly into ABC, which is in the process of revamping its regular Saturday lineup and put on a rerun of the movie "The Midnight Hour." NBC won the week ending Nov. 1, according to the A.C. Nielsen with an average prime-time rating of 15.8. CBS had a 13.4 and ABC a 12.6.

ABC is still second so far in the 6-week-old season. The season-to-date network averages are: NBC 16.6, ABC 14.5 and CBS 13.8. "The Cosby Show" was No. 1 after being usurped for the first time this season by Game 7 of the World Series. Last week it had a rating of 31.3 and a 47 share.

November is one of four months a year when ratings are measured in local markets for purposes of determining advertising rates. The networks try to help affiliates by putting on special programming. ABC started the sweeps month badly on Sunday when it's ballyhooed "Dolly!" variety show rated only a 12.6 with a 19 share.

It was up against special programming on both the other networks "Echoes" on CBS and "Dangerous Affection," a TV movie on NBC. CBS won the night. The 10 lowest-rated network shows were: "The Oldest Rookie," "Top Flight" (a CBS special), "Hotel," "Sledge Hammer!" "The Charmings," "West 57th," "My Sister Sam," "The Midnight Hour," "Everything's Relative" and "Leg Work." ticular time period. NBC's entire Thursday-night lineup was in the top 10, including "L.A. Law" with its highest rating yet, 21.0.

The top 10 were: "The Cosby Show" NBC, "A Different World" NBC, "Cheers" NBC, "Growing Pains" ABC, "Night Court" NBC, "Who's the Boss?" ABC, "Murder, She Wrote" CBS, "60 Minutes" CBS, "Family Ties" NBC and "L.A. Law" NBC. The first installment of CBS' two-part miniseries "Echoes in the Darkness," based on the Joseph Wambaugh bestseller, ranked 11th with a rating of 20.1 and a 33 share. The installment Monday will be in the Nielsen report next week, but overnight ratings from the 15 biggest markets showed it holding at a 20-plus rating. "Echoes" was the starting gun in the 'Fatal Attraction' still top box office draw Financial problems plague Dallas Ballet DALLAS (AP) The Dallas Ballet will be forced to fold unless $180,000 for salaries and production costs is raised by Thursday, say officials who remain optimistic the company will survive.

The disclosure Monday by Karl Zavit-kovsky, ballet board president, and General Manager Philip Semark came only two weeks after the ballet hired Russian dancer Andrei Ustinov, who defected while his troupe was in Dallas. Without the money, "the ballet will close. There's no decision to be made about it," Semark said. "People will not come to work any more if they're not paid." But he said he is optimistic that patrons will help the company through the crisis. "We have $550,000 in renewal gilts (pending) at this time," he said.

"Renewals are usually pretty easy (to obtain). I think we will make it." HOLLYWOOD (AP) "Fatal Attraction" continued to lure moviegoers and took first place again in the nation's weekend box office, but its dominance will be challenged this week with major new releases. "Fatal Attraction" earned $6.4 million over the weekend, bringing the movie's gross to $75.9 million. The Paramount thriller details a dangerously obsessed woman's pursuit of a man with whom she's had a weekend fling. In second place was "Baby Boom," which added 562 screens to its distribution and earned $2.9 million.

The movie stars Diane Keaton as a dedicated career woman whose values are turned around by an orphan. "Suspect," starring Cher and Dennis Quaid, took third place with $2,698,000. The movie from Tri-Star features Cher as an attorney who becomes involved with a juror on her case. In a close fourth place was the Whoopi Goldberg movie "Fatal Beauty," earning $2,693,000 in its first week of release. The MGM-UA movie stars Miss Goldberg as an undercover Los Angeles Police Department narcotics officer.

"Prince of Darkness" sold enough tickets for fifth place on Halloween weekend, earning $2.6 million. The plot of the Universal movie has students from the University of Southern California called up to stop Satan and his legion from destroying earth. Another debut movie, "The Hidden," came in sixth place, earning $2.4 million. The movie from New Line has Michael Nouri as a cop chasing down normal folks who have mysteriously been turned into mass-murdering robots. Rounding out the Top 10 were "The Princess Bride," with $2 million; "Like Father, Like Son," with $1.9 million; "Dirty Dancing" with $1.3 million; and "Someone To Watch Over Me," with $844,336.

"Fatal Attraction" has been No. 1 at the box office for seven weeks, but its stance will be severely challenged next weekend with Oscar-contention class films being released. Among the newest flood of films is the Richard Attenborough-directed "Cry Freedom," about black South African activist Stephen Biko and newspaper editor Donald Woods; and "The Glass Menagerie," a film adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play directed by Paul Newman and starring wife Joanne Woodward, John Malkovich, Karen Allen and James Naughton. Also due this week are "Made In Heaven," a comedy starring Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis; "Russkies," an adventure about three American boys who find a shipwrecked Soviet sailor; "Hello Again," starring Shelley Long as a supposedly deceased woman who just won't go away; "Barfly," a romantic comedy starring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway; and "Less Than Zero," starring Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz in the screen version of the book by Bret Easton Ellis. DRAWN TOGETHER: Glenn Close and Michael Douglas star in the thriller 'Fatal The film continues to be the nation's top box office draw.
