Friday, November 30, 1990 4B Reno Gazette-Journal Gaming license granted to 'imaginative' Vegas casino IIW II II II 2-DAY MM growing." Commission members briefly Suestioned one of the partners, ohn Bonifazio, about his alleged associations with Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal and Joey Cusamano. But Bonifazio denied any ties with the two men, both of whom belong to Nevada's "black book" of unsavory types banned from casinos. Commission members also briefly questioned another partner, Ron Radcliffe, about a raid a year ago on his house by FBI agents who thought he might have been involved in money-laundering or skimming. Radcliffe said nothing ever came of it and the charges were untrue and inaccurate. The Santa Fe, which sits on a 36-acre site, features 200 hotel rooms, a casino, a 60-lane bowling center, an ice rink and dining facilities overlooking the rink.

It encountered some opposition from local residents in the area, but Lowden said most people are pleased with it now. "You'll always find a few people out there who you'll never satisfy," he said. O'Reilly praised the project, saying it represents a "creative and imaginative approach" to gaming. CARSON CITY (AP) The state Gamine Commission granted a license Thursday for the new Santa Fe hotel-casino in Las Vegas, which boasts southern Nevada's only high-tech bowling center and ice rink. The Santa Fe is part of the Sahara Resorts corporation owned by Paul Lowden.

The corporation also owns the Sahara and Hacienda hotel-casinos in Las Vegas and the Pioneer hotel-casino in Laughlin. The Gaming Commission unanimously approved the license after Lowden said he's optimistic the Santa Fe will turn a profit. He said it's a neighborhood casino that will cater to locals. Commission Chairman John O'Reilly said there have been questions as to whether the corporation is too highly leveraged, but Lowden said it's in a strong financial position. "We are comfortable with our cash flows," Lowden said.

"We were even able to retire $13.5 million of long-term debt during recent expansion projects at the Sahara and Hacienda. "The Santa Fe represents our first large venture into the local market and we believe its location is where the growth is coming in Las Vegas. A senior staff member to Brown confirmed that it was "75 percent -certain" Areias would be named to the post within the next month, perhaps as soon as next week. Other Capitol staffers put the higher largely because state workers, with Brown's ap- proval, on Thursday began moving desks, computers and file cabinets from Areias' cramped office into the more expansive upstairs quarters of outgoing Agriculture Com- mittee Chairman Norm Waters of Plymouth. "I think it's probably going to happen," said Barry Wyatt, Areias' chief of staff.

"That looks like the best proba- bility but no one has formally said the words, 'You said Carol i Thorp, Areias' press secretary. "I got to believe it's between 90 and 95 percent sure," said Mike Falasco, Waters' senior agriculture committee consultant and a childhood friend of Areias. REG. 100.00-400.00. In short, Areias staff members have switched to jeans as they hustle up and down stairs trying to complete the move by the end of Friday so they'll be ready when lawmakers return Monday for a special budget session of the Legislature. Areias has been lobbying hard for the job since Waters lost reelection Nov. 6, and Wyatt quickly cites several reasons why his boss is the most logical choice. Raised on a San Joaquin Valley dairy farm, Areias intimately knows farm issues. Named head of a special committee on earthquake preparedness, Areias has an excellent recent track record on being out front in reviewing state emergency procedures and spreading the word on work left to be done.

Finally, a quick review of Assembly members already serving on the 11-member Agriculture Committee shows that the only other Democrat free to head a standing committee without major reshuffling has been in office less than a year: Sal Cannella of Ceres. Left unsaid was Areias' role as one of the dissident Democrats known as the gang of five. Beginning largely in early 1988, Areias and four coriservative-to-moderate junior Assembly members charged Brown was a corrupt tyrant and repeatedly over several months took steps to topple him. In the end, there never were enough votes to remove Brown. Gannett News Service JERSEY TOPS REG.
