Now here cmes a gentleman in the role of a mini-Art Modell with a maxi-task of adding at least another twist to Younsstown's history.

R. James Erskine is financing a minor league football team, the Youngstown Hard-hadt, to begin play this Summer in the Midwest Football League. The Hardhats will play against teams from Columbus, Indianapolis, Niagara in; fans in the area give his team a chance. "People around hrre have told me fans won't go (or minor league football," Erskine said. "But I know.

"It doesn't take a helluva big turnout to make this thing successful. Our tickets will be priced at about $2 or $2.50 and fans a game would suffice. "It would take only to see us through a season. How we'll do the initial year will determine our future." Erskine's current chores in Parnelli Eyes Triple Crown clude opening an office and compiling a staff. -jfc ii BELIEVE IT OR NOT, the time of year usuallly associated with ice fishing is nearly upon us. Several large water impoundments and even farm ponds produced good ice fishing last year, but until a few days ago, the weatherman just hasn't cooperated by providing freezing temperatures and persistent snow signals to allow the outdoorsman many thoughts on the subject. Veteran ice fishermen already have their spots picked out novices are encouraged to return to those bodies of water where they caught fish during warmer months. While ice fishing has its enjoyable moments, it also brings about some hazards for the unsuspecting. Thus, a few rules of thumb should be observed.

First of all, two inches of clear ice will support ONE man on foot, while three inches of ice will support a group traveling in single file. Ice at a thickness of iy2 inches will usually support a car while on the other hand, slush (milky) ice is only half as strong as clear ice. Specialists with the Ohio Division of Wildlife suggest that fishermen wait until ice is known to be at least four inches thick before venturing onto it. Bodies of water in Northeastern Ohio which produced good catches during ice-fishing stints last Winter included Mogadore Reservoir, Nimisila Reservoir, Zepernick Lake and Berlin Reservoir. Farm ponds sometimes out-produce even these excellent fishing spots.

State regulations restrict fishing holes in the ice to a diameter of 12 inches, and the use of tip-up fishing devices to six. Tip-ups and ice fishing shanties must carry the name and address of the owner legibly written in English. Summer fishing gear is seldom used for ice fishing. There can't be a dominating force, he said, because of other teams such as Al Un-ser's brother Bobby with Dan Gurney, and Mark Donohue with Roger Penske.

Yet, he said, "We thrive on winning races and try to have the best talent to do so. We've got the opportunity with the greatest talent available." ALSO trying to cut down the odds by sheer strength of numbers. Four of the newly designed cars will head for Indianapolis, with the other two held in reserve for races the rest of the year. He's content to build cars for a stable of established drivers Al Unser, Joe Leonard and Mario Andretti. As for bait, the best for bluegills, yellow perch, small bass and crappies is maggots on a small hook or small flies, salmon eggs, or small jigs with maggots. Larger bass and crappies will take medium-sized min-nows fished in deep holes in the lake's bottom. Large perch, especially those found in the Sandusky Bay area, gobble up minnows and perch eyes while northern pike and chain pickerel prefer chubs or young suckers. Redear sunfish, found at Mogadore Reservoir, can be fooled with maggots and red-worms, jiggled near the bottom. Some fishermen will use a bobber while others prefer to hand-hold their fishing tackle so that they can feel the slightest reaction by the fish to the bait.

Fishing with his younger brother, Denny, around 2 Sunday morning at Mogadore Reservoir, Fred latched onto a largemouth bass while wading the shoreline. It turned out to be a 7y2-pounder after Fred had gutted it, and that's the biggest fish he has ever caught in the U.S. "I caught a 14-pound catfish in Canada once," he said, "but this is the largest catch in the U.S. for me." He'll have the fish mounted, and it will take its place along such other fish and game mounts as a 5y2-pound largemouth, a full gray fox mount and a bear neck mount.
