Cedergren. Security Pacific Bank. P. O. Box Old city hall in Needles hit by fire Needles' landmark old city hall was destroyed by fire early Friday morning in a blaze that is believed to -have started when rain shorted part of the building's electrical system.

The building, constructed in 1909. was completely engulfed in flames eight minutes after sheriff's deputies spotted the fire at 1:30 a.m. The walls began collapsing about 1.45 a.m. and continued to fall all night. Firemen were unable to control the blaze until about 5 a.m.

The 68-year-old structure, which formerly housed a reading room for Santa Fe Railroad workers, was sold to the city of Needles by Santa Fe in the early 1950s for $1. It has been used as a museum since the city moved its offices to a new building in 1973. No estimate on the dollar value of the building was available, but a spokesman for the Needles fire department said the structure and the museum collection were of "priceless" historical value.
