(UP! Teiephoto) Rickles'TV costar Elizabeth Allen maintains actingi By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) EU- zabeth Allen, who plays the Navy captain in the new "CPO Sharkey" series, spends more time as a businesswoman these days than she does acting.

Elizalwth, talli slender and beautiful, has opened her own women's clothing store in a shopping mall in the San Fernando Valley. Her two careers occupy so much of her life Elizabeth has little time to eat and sleep, niuch lesiB worry about remarriage. Elizabeth's store is a five- minute walk frmn her home, which stands out from all the typical California ranch-style houses in the neighborhood: Her dwelling is a single-story rustic reminder of Niew England. It's shake roof, black shutters, used-brick walk and birch trees bring to mind a Vermont Christmas card. Inside, the decor is French country, with vaulted and careers beamed ceilings, peg and grooved floors and wood paneling all around.

The living room is filled with warm red colors, which set off her of pewter dishes, caiidlesticks, howlsand goblets glowing on stheir shelves. The furniture is overstuffed and comfortable, with an antique acquisition here and there. Elizabeth has converted mie of her three bedrooms into a working office, a sort of annex for her store's business affairs. Her bedroom is feminine indeed, done in blue and white, including white pegged and grooved floors. There is a spacious back yard with swimming pool and plenty of trees.

Scampering around the place are a trio (rf Yorkshire terriers, two of whom are named for characters from the play, "The Man Who Came To Dinner," in which Elizabeth starred ACROSS 1 Alternative, 7 Contribute 11 Prophecy 12Xordial 14 Stringed instrument 15 Niche 16 Printer's measure (pi.) 17 Racetrack 19 Man's name 20 Ineffective 22 Mountain pass in India 25 New England cape 26 Small vegetable 29 Arias 31 Effecting 33 wall covering 35 Forest clearing 36 The sun 37 Yale man 38 Flying saucers (abbr.) 39 Body height 42 Gilding 45 Ilk 46 Women's patriotic society 49 indolent; 51 Erase 53 Court game 54 Required 55 Athletic contest 56 Fears DOWN '1 Sticky stuff 2 Stuffy 3 Makes lace 4 I (Ger.) 5 Margarines 6 Audacity 7 Become firm 8 S.Amer. Two big, fat cats round out Elizabeth's domicile, Essex and Miss Until the series began, and certainly before Elizabeth had her new store built, she en- tertained frequently at home. She also spent a great deal of time on the road, (rften appearing with Paul Lynde in the likes of "Plaza Suite" and "My Daughter Rated But since last fall Elizabeth Allen has had to revise her life style entirely. When she isn't at NBC costarring with Don Ricklps, she is buying merchandise tar her store, sorting it, pricing it, arranging window displays or greeting customers. She sells dresses, sweaters, slacks, suits, scarves, jewehy, blouses, the works in what she likes to call a haberdashery for today's women.

During the noon hour she pops over from the studio to see how business is going. She is also there on weekends. "Why work from 9 to 5 every day for somebody else," she says, "when you can work 18 hours a day fw yourself?" Elizabeth says she isn't tempted to wear all the beautiful things sells. She compares her situation to that of the bartender who doesn't drink. "I'm so tired of being so involved with the merchandise I'm really not in clothes anymore," she says.

At least she doesn't worry about her acting wardrobe. She wears Navy uniforms in the series, complete with gold braid. For relaxation Elizabeth works in her garden, raking leaves and tending her 38 rose bushes. She used to trim the lawn with her power mower but hired a gardener for that chore when the store and the series demanded so much of her time. Elizabeth, a vegetarian, once prepared almost all her own meals.

Now she eats on the run, relying mostly MI salads. She's still handy with v6get4ble souffles and is most proud of a zucchini dish made with fresh peppers, onion and eggs. When she's not too exhausted Elizabeth dates one of several beaux, usually for dinner and the theater. But there simply isn't enough time for the luxury of hjeading off to Tecate, Mexico, where she used to spend five days at a time on a health farm recharging her batteries. "I a hectic life," Elizabeth concludes, "but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm independent and enjoying the creative aspects of business as much as I do the acting." Police chief wants for new name MOORESVILLE, Ind. (UPI) Police Chief Harold Martin wants the Morgan Circuit Court to make "Kojak" his middle name and promises, "I'm not a clown and it's not a joke." 'They've called me that for years," the balding, 63-year-dd chief said. "I'd thought about ailding it as a middle name for a couple of years. I was, sitting in the office a few days ago and finally decided, 'Hell, let's just make it His name will be Harold Wayne Kojak MarUn, if the court grants his petition. Martin likes the nickname so much he posed in April at Churchill Downs race track with actw Telly Savalas, the Kojak of the television series.

Some Mooresville town board members seem unamused. "I saw it coming. It was only a matter of time," said board member Vernon Kimmel. Board member Ingrid Habig was favorable: "This is a pet name he loves and if he wants to go by it, it's his prerogative. All the townspeople and merchants call him that.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Besides, I think he's done a good job for the Martin said, "There are police officers all over the country nicknamed Kojak and Columbo and Cannon." A retired Army ist sergeant, Martin has been Mooresville's police chief more than seven years. Bing croons at New York ceremonies NEW YORK (UPI) Bing Crosby crooned "White Christmas" Wednesday as Mayor Abraham Beame flipped a switch to Ught city's official Christmas tree. "Bing is here to wish us a white Christmas, despite the wishes of the Sanitation said Beame, who introduced the visiting singer to the crowd of some 1,000 persons as "a joyous American Christmas custom." The tree, a 46-foot balsam fir, was shn-ter this year than those customarily purchased by the city. Officials blamed the fiscal crisis.

Ann Landers answers your probtems Dear Ann: Almost daily, and now in your column, something is published about "warehousing" the elderly and the inhumane conditions of homes for the aged. How many of these "experts" have actually faced the problem? My 83 -year-old mother has had two strokes. She is senile, can't walk, is very heavy and has no bladder or bowel control. Trained personnel is required to take care of her. Unfortunately, my mother is very demanding.

Her latest request is that we take her to the hairdresser, in an ambulance, if necessary. (There's a hairdresser in the home but mother doesn't like her work.) When mother first became incapacitated my father tried to take care of her. It amounted to 24 -hour-a-day duty nearly kiUed him. She doesn't like being in the home, of course. They must tie her in a wheelchair so she can't fall out.

They insist that she eat her meals and take her medicine. She views all this as a conspiracy to "mistreat" her. Father visits her twice a day. I see her at least four times a week. For the privilege of keeping her in this "warehouse" we pay $1200 a month.

I don't expect to live to be 83. If I make it I will surely be on welfare. Mother's iUness wiU have wiped me out: As the nation's leading Arbiter of Conscience, how about presenting the other Another "Bad Child" Dear CMd: I was inundated by letters from "the other side" and my heart goes out to all of you who are caught hi this trap. There are no easy answers, but it seems to me that if our great country could spend 150 billion dollars on the war in Vietnam, someone in Washington should be able to figure out a way to care for our elderly at a coattlMttwiU not wh(de families. Dear Ann Landers: Several years ago a woman who worked as my husband's secretary told him she thought she was falling in love with Mm.

He said be took it "as a joke," raminded her that ttey were both married, and he swears on his mother's name there was no affair. The secretary moved out of town with her husband and family soon after her "confession." I knew nothing of this episode until a few weeks ago when one of those "Language of Love" cards' arrived. The former secretary had sent it to Us office but it was mistakenly forwarded to our home. The I card listed "my reasons for loving you." The' damn fool signed her name and added, "Be happy." I wonder if she realizes much anxiety her card has' caused me. My husband must, have liked her once, but now he- says, "Forget the dumb broad." Well, it's not that My impulse was'to send the card to her husband (I'm saving it) but there are: children Involved and I don't, want to punish innocent people.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to hurt her as she inirt me. What do you Unwanted Mail From Wichita Dear U.M.F.W.: Your husband gave you advice. 1 hope you take it. Peqile who try to "get invariably end up behind. Tear up the card and quit while- you're ahead.

"Sooner or later I'm going to die," she told reporters Wed-. nesday, I'm not going to retire." White spots need watching By LAWRENCE E. LAMB, M.D.

DEAR DR. LAMB 1 am inquiring about a diagnosis my sister had. The doctor said she has leukoplakia. It's some spot she has on her tongue. What is this? Is it a form of cancer? Could you tell me what should be'done for it? She had a biopsy; the doctor said it was not malignant, but she is worried.

She has had trouble for years swallowing anything that was not chewed-up real fine. She is undernourished because of the swallowing, and not being able to swallow her food, she sometimes relies on liquid made from blending in a blender, like milk, honey and banana. After all the doctors she's been to, they should have told her what causes her difficulty in swallowing. Can. you give her any advice on this? DEAR READER The term leukoplakia means white patch.

Leuko in medical terminology means white and plakia refers to a patch. Most often they are seen on the lip or inner cheek of the mouth, but they do occur on the tongue and gingiva (gums). A common cause is smoliing. The pipe smoker may develop a leukoplakia of the lipi where the pipe stem rests on the lip surface. Ill-fitting dentures may injure the inner cheek or other areas of the mouth, including the side of the tongue and cause a leukoplakia.

In all of these instances the irritating factor should be identified and removed or corrected whether it is the pipe or a set of ili-fitting dentures. The general nutrition problems your sister has experienced may be related to the leukoplakia, but I can't say without knowing more about the basis of her difficulty in swallowing. Leukoplakia should be regarded as a potential cancer.Thatis why the doctor took a biopsy. Many of them do not progress to a malignan- cy, but others do. I must emphasize that your has already considered this and has satisfied himself that your sister does not ndw have a cancer.

However, it is very important that she be examined regularly and that a doctor check the status of the spot to detect any new changes as early as possible. If your sister smokes she should quit at once. If she has dentures that don't fit or a natural tooth that sticks out in such a way to irritate the tongue, these or related problems that cause irritation should be corrected without delay. The mouth should be kept.absolutely clean, at all times. If any other local treat- meht is needed her doctor will be able to tell on the basis of the nature of the spot.

The swallowing problem could be from many different disorders, including spasm of the esophagus. And even nervous tension can cause it. Anyone who has difficulty in swallowing must have a medical evaluation as soon as possible. One of the many different causes is cancer of -7 the esophagus. Early detec- tion improves the chances for adequate treatment.

Your sister has had frequent examinations so I would not think this would be problem. Do you know someone who needs to know about the harm- ful effects of smoking? If so send 50 cents with a long, stamped envelope with his address on it, and ask for The Health Letter number 2-6, Tobacco: Cigarettes, Cigars, Pipes. Just send your request to Dr. Lamb in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019..
