2C Reno Gazette-Journal Wednesday, Juna 22. 1988 Nuke test From page 1C cians are based. The scientists are at the remote desert site to prepare for a blast in mid-August that will determine the ability of the Kremlin and the United States to measure the size of each other's nuclear tests. The devices will be the sixth and seventh tested this year at the Nevada site. Six of the Soviet scientists have been at the Nevada site for three of those previous tests.

Today's tests will bring to 682 the number of devices tested at the remote desert site. The shots are code-named Rhyolite, after a Nevada ghost town on the edge of the sprawling desert test site, and Nightingale, after a mining camp in Pershing County. The 25 scientists, who arrived in Las Vegas Sunday night on a commercial flight from Washington, D.C., went through badging procedures at the test site Monday morning. The United States has 34 technicians at the Soviet test site preparing for a joint verification experiment in Russia a month after the U.S. test.

Cahill, health department chief environmental officer. The Glendale water treatment plant on the Truckee near Bally's remained open for normal operations, said Karl Wal-quist, spokesman for Westpac, the region's primary water purveyor, Steve Varela, Reno city engineer, believes rain might have overloaded the sewer system and contributed to the break. But he thinks the downpour wasn't the primary cause. Possible causes or contributing factors include recent underground work done near the site, or a buildup of hydrogen sulfide a sewage byproduct. A sulfide buildup could have corroded the main's lining, causing it to collapse or become clogged with debris.

The pipe is one of several primary sewer mains leading from residential and commercial areas to the Reno-Sparks sewage treatment plant in the extreme east Truckee Meadows. The main is between 10 and 50 years old, and officials will have to check records to determine when it was installed. Reed said. Large sewer main breaks like Monday's probably occur about twice every five Spill From peg 1C About 25 workers from the city, Washoe District Health Department, Sierra Pacific Power and a private contractor hired by Reno worked through the day. Several were slated to remain at the scene overnight Tuesday.

Workers spent Monday morning and afternoon digging to find the break, and found it at 3 p.m. A 20-foot section of 30-inch-wide main burst under 10 feet of ground near the camper area entrance. Before the overflow was contained, most of it was funneled or flowed into Bally's Lake, a 30-acre, 160-foot-deep pond holding water that isn't used. A former gravel pit, it had been lined with cement when Bally's was built in 1978. The hotel was then called MGM Grand.

The health dpartment ordered the city to spread chlorine on the lake Tuesday to prevent health hazards. If odors become excessive, the city also may have to put special chemicals in the pond. No sewage reached the Truckee River, which is just west of Bally's, said Carl jrZ Joe GownUdene-Journal OVERFLOW CLEANUP: Pumping at Bally's Tuesday afternoon. up about 50 yards of dirt that may have come in contact with sewage. Under a health department order, much of the dirt may have to buried in a landfill rather than used at the overflow site.
