March 5, Akron Eeacon Journal 9 47-tndusfrial Propert For Ranf Bridge Is To Seattle Gambling Police i mi ii m- ni mi "in ii i rm mi nrriiii -i nn mi mi mmmmmmmmmM By HARRY SOBER You have a few friends In at your home, say, on Delia for your regular social bridge session, and the stakes are strictly penny ante perhaps one tenth or one twentieth of a cent a point. But instead of scoring in the normal rubber bridge fashion, you score as in four-deal Chicago. You would certainly not consider yourselves as gambling, and would laugh at the suggestion that you may be breaking the law. However, there is a knock on the door; the fuzz walks in and carts you and your friends off to jail.

THE SCENE WAS the home of Mrs. Madeline L. Anderson, who has conducted a private bridge club in Seattle for some 25 years, as well as interclub tournaments and duplicate games. Fourteen people were playing Chicago bridge one day last September, when a dozen armed police officers invaded Mrs. Anderson's home and carted the players off to the local hoosegow, where they were fingerprinted, photographed and booked on a charge Of gambling.

When the citizens came to trial in Seattle Municipal Court in December, the judge ruled that bridge is not a game of chance and therefore not gambling. He based his decision on a California Supreme Court decision of 1962 that bridge is a game of skill. HOWEVER, THE JUDGE'S decision as to the nonguilt of the citizens did not prevent the prosecutor's office from pressing a felony charge against Mrs. Anderson for "giving aid to the playing of bridge with cards." The trial came to court Feb. 7th, and Alfred Sheinwold (whose syndicated bridge column appears daily in Seattle as well as In Akron) was on hand as an expert witness, prepared to testify that bridge is a game of skill, rather than a game of chance, and that the anti-gambling ordinances would not, therefore, apply.

However, for technical reasons which had nothing to do with bridge, the case was dismissed before it could be discussed whether chance was a material factor in the outcome of the game. IT IS OF INTEREST to bridge players that the prosecutor conceded, in making his opening statement, that tournament bridge is a game of skill. He also conceded that rubber bridge in the long run is a game of skill, His attack was on the use of the Chicago method of scoring. With Chicago, the prosecutor argued, a score is recorded after four deals, and in some instances a player may pay off or be paid on the result of just four deals. The test, therefore, is whether or not chance is a material factor in the outcome of just four deals rather than in the course of some undefined long run.

Sheinwold was prepared to show that the Ingenuity of this argument might well have been devoted to a better course. first game is surely recorded. Would any sensible person maintain that the outcome of that game was determined by chance? SHEINWOLD IS READY to demonstrate that chance is not a material factor in the play of even a single hand, whether in rubber bridge, Chicago bridge, or tournament bridge. He also cautions that "The petty politicians who pander to Puritans with an attack on rubber bridge today may move against tournament bridge tomorrow." It is worthy of note that the Seattle Unit of the American Contract Bridge League decided not to lift a finger to help Mrs. Anderson to defend the good name of bridge.

Since only rubber bridge was being attacked, the Seattle Unit decided that it was not involved! Play for money, but BIG money this time, is the subject of still another bridge controversy. After the Italian Blue Team returned home from Las Vegas some $30,000 richer after defeating the World Champion Aces in the highly heralded Challenge Match and the world's top 24 teams in the Invitational Knockout Match which followed, the subject of big money prizes was brought to the inescapable attention of the ACBL. The League's new president Percy X. Bean (who defeated our own District Five representative to the ACBL, Charles S. Landau for the position by the narrowest of margins) is currently in the process of formulating an ACBL policy towards such events.

The Board has already expressed no disapproval of play In such events by ACBL officers or members of the Board of Directors, but said the ruling specifically does not apply to employees. More, much more, will be said about money games later. While last week's Northeastern Ohio Sectional Championships, sponsored by the Akron Unit of the ACBL, was not an exceptionally large tournament, it was most successful. Successful in that it was well-planned, well-conducted and generous in its hospitality to the 346 tables of players who attended. Attendance at the three-day tourney which was held at the Hilton South Inn, was down 47 tables from Akron's November tourney, also held at the Hilton South, but up 30 tables from last year's February tournament, the last held in downtown Akron.

The largest three-day Sectional Championship thus far conducted at the Hilton South was the Cleveland Whist Club's July event, when 454 tables were in play. AKRON-AREA PLAYERS led the field in two of the six events at the NEO play; Richard and Kay Barbaris, 2810 Cedar Hill Cuyahoga Falls, were members of the winning Swiss Team, while Mrs. F. W. (Elsie Mae) Smith, 2864 Archwood Cuyahoga Falls and Mrs.

T. J. (Joyce) Wise, 1629 Riverside won the Open Pairs Consolation event. Four area players placed among the overall winners in more than one event. Mrs.

R. C. (Bee) Mills, 1915 Twenty-sixth Cuyahoga Falls, was third in the Mixed Pairs and tied for sixth in the Women's Pairs; Jack R. Creasey, 1449 Commonwealth was fourth in the Open Pairs and tied for sixth in the Mixed Pairs, and Wayne B. Lewis, 1213 McKinley and Walter L.
