Hoffman identified Via as the man who shot him in the back of the head after taking from him. Wynn said Via is the man he saw sleeping in -a car about 3 miles west of Hoffman's station at 6 a. m. Sept.

4, an hour before the robbery. MRS. VIA said she knows little about her husband's movements since the night he wrote a note and walked out of her house. "It was May 11 or 12," she said. "He just walked out in the middle of the night, He left a note saying he had to go away to get his head together.

I didn't see him until he came back the first time, Sept. 21." THE TWO dates are significant to Lt. Bruce Greathouse, Geauga County detective, who estimates he's accumulated 20 pounds of paper and worked in an effort to solve the Hoffman case. The bullet removed from Hoffman's head and those' JUOl terrogation of Miss Bouvar, who surrendered Sept. 28 after she learned Deputy Wynn had recorded her license number.

Miss Bouvar supplied photos of herhelf and Via, whom she first identified as John Cole and later as Jody Col-trane. The photos provided a travelog of the couple's movements from May until Labor Day, the detective said. The woman was released on $2,500 bond but failed to make a court appearance Oct. 4, Greathouse said. SHARON VIA said her husband came home for the first time Sept.

21 a day after Jane Maguire left her home in East Washington, for Wheeling, W. Va.f and a day before her body was found in some brush at a roadside rest area on Ohio 8 in Boston Twp. "He asked me if he could come home and Mrs. Via said. "Naturally, I said, 'yes." He stayed until Sept.

25. Then he said he was going away for a few days. "He came back Sept. 28 and stayed to Oct. 4.

Then he said he was going home to visit his mother. He claimed he broke up with Charmaine. He said she was crazy, that she knew this John Cole a wild man. He said he didn't need the kind of trouble they got into, that he didn't realize what a crazy pair they were." LT. GREATHOUSE said Charmaine went to Rich Creek with Via.

"They were together until Monday," the detective said. Continued From Page A hole" on the second floor, she said. Mrs. Via said she realizes she may face prosecution for harboring Via and for helping dispose of a gun he had hidden in the home. She said she was arrested by Cleveland police Wednesday evening in connection with the investigation, along with her ex-husband, Floyd Dailey, 30, and Walter Engle, 21, both of whom rent rooms in her home.

"JODY CALLED me Wednesday evening it was after 8 from the jail," she said. "I was very surprised. He told me to get rid of the gun. I asked, "What gun?" He said he had a gun hidden in the cubby hole. "I called Floyd and he and Walter took it to Gordon Park and threw it in Lake Erie.

The police came real quick. I guess they had a tap. That's when they arrested me." MRS. VIA said she was released after a few hours because she is a diabetic and must take four insulin injections a day. Dailey and Engle were still In custody late Thursday while police attempted to locate the weapon along the lake shore.

Mrs. Via said her marriage to the accused slayer was a happy one until early this year when he became interested in Charmaine Bouvar, 29, a Broadview Heights go-go dancer. "I invited them inside and made us all coffee. That's when he said he really wasn't there for the gas, he was here for the money, and pulled the gun," Hoffman said. "I said, no problem, and gave him the money. He said he needed my car keys and that he had to tie me up in the back room." HOFFMAN said Via's manner was calm and that he carefully explained where he plcJined to leave his car in a cornfield near a Yamaha dealership west of the station on 422. He said Miss Bouvar, who had remained quietly sitting in a corner of the office, tied his hands behind his back, then Via walked him into the back room.

"He told me to lie on the floor and even helped me get down," Hoffman said. "I wasn't worried until he told me to turn my head to the wall. He said, 'so long' and I said goodby. There was a long pause, then he shot me." I closed my eyes and waited. I guess I waited for about three minutes.

"I was afraid he was still there, waiting outside for me. I got my hands free and went outside. Some people came by and helped me." LT. GREATHOUSE said Hoffman was still on his feet when the deputies arrived. "We were afraid any movement might kill him and we had a heck of a time keeping him still.

He kept pacing around," the detective said. He said Deputy Wynn, learning of the robbery, called the radio dispatcher for a description, When it matched that of the man and woman he had roused from their sleep in what they later learned was Miss Bouvar's parked car on 422, the deputies sped to the location.
