HARTFORD. DIAL "LL or TELEGRAPH Sports Bob Paulos ences at GAAO tilnics last week place additional emphasis on the need for more playground area in the oity. Recent conversion of portion of Riverside Park to playgrounds will do much to relieve congestion at other recreation centers. Those in attendance at GAAC business clinic meetings have shown Interest In recreation projects. A major topic for discussion has been construction of a swimming pool, many' have urged a sports arena for the city, several have talked of larger and more numerous playgrounds.

There can be a few permanent arguments raised against a sports arena, swimming pool, 'or. addltional playgrounds. One of the arguments against an arena might be the shortage of materials, a problem which some day will be solved. Segregation and other arguments 'have been handled in other which have swimming pools, including Wood River, which caters to much out-town trade. Arguments against more playgrounds are weak.

One of the major: accomplishments of the GAAC clinics has been for residents to help city officials and men to realize that A large majority of the townspeople are recreation and sportsminded. Whether present recreatonal facilities are adequate is the question to be decided. In promoting the use of Riverside Park for ball fields and tennis courts, the recreation department furnished statistics. on playground usage which startled some officials of the city government. It was a rude awakening for" the officials, but' a' necessary one.

With the added emphasis on provision" of recreation facilities, brought by the business clinics, projects similar to the Riverside Park program may be started throughout the Funds for such projects are unavailable, but methods for providing needed rev'enue may be disclosed. At. present, at least one movement for a modern athletic stadlum and fleld house Is under way In Alton, and' even more may follow. The present solicitation has already received about two-thirds of the necessary financial support.
