Thurs Jan. 11, l'" Alnm Hr.mm J-munl jj. JjJ 1-Deaih Notice I 1 -Death Notices i 1-Death Notices OOLAK r. Crane A Teacher Needs Missionary Zeal Writes: Dr. CrartK Jay Ostrandor, (if), is a high school tearhrr.

at Goodrich, Michigan. "Dr. Cranf," one of his former pupils informrd mo, he is Ihe kind ol teacher you'd endorse. "For he likes students and enjoys increasing their enthusiasm for education. He is as dedicated as a church missionary! "He is also a perfect example of the Bible's statement about 'going the second "For he not only goes out of his way to help his pupils inside the All such dedicated teachers are storing up a great deal of credit in the eyes of the Almighty.

But some teachers simply go into that field because of inertia or laziness. "It's a good racket," one college graduate recently confessed. "Despite the yelling about poor pay, you get more than three months' vacation every year, and draw $500 a month for a nice white collar job." Such motivation indicates a poor teacher, even before he ever sets foot inside the classroom! For the cardinal asset of every superb teacher Is a missionary fervor to transform children's Jives and cultivate a liking for cultural subjects. A woman with only two years of college, but with such missionary motivation, is much superior to a teacher with an M. A.

or Ph. D. degree who simply picks teaching as the line of least resistance. And many college professors never had any professional preparation for pedagogy. They have had no "practice teaching" and often can't even make a 10-minute talk that would keep any audience awake.

Yet they are accepted for college jobs just because they have a Ph. D. in some technical field. But superb teaching requires far more than a college degree! School boards, please take note, and send for my "Test for Good Teachers," enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents. Don't be stampeded merely by an applicant's fancy degrees! classroom, hut he enriches their lives by outside cultural projects, too.

"For example, last year he took about 40 of his students, plus three of their mothers, in a chartered bus to Chicago. "At his own expense he gave them a five-day tour of the city. "And he has done this same thing every year for about 25 years! "More than 1,000 students (600 girls and 400 boys) have thus had an exciting and educational trip to Chicago at Professor Ostrander's expense. Most of them had never visited a big city before. "Dr.

Crane, wouldn't you rate him as a very superior teacher on your 'Test for Good Teachers'?" Would that more teachers had this missionary fervor to transform the lives of youngsters In a constructive manner. I- (i II," i Im i-t'l ill' pr eel 'in!
