James NUCLEAR ENERGY: Boon or Boondoggle? The Doily News explores the pros and cons of this vital controversy in a thought- provoking in-depth series BEGINNING SUNDAY DEC. 12 Is the nuclear power plant being built at Glen Rose a safe answer to our energy needs or Can Metroplex residents be sitting on a time bomb that could leave generations to come fighting unsafe radiation exposure? Veteran reporter Frank Trombley will tackle this question and other facets of the issue such as: Will electricity generated by nuclear power plants really be cheaper or will consumers find themselves paying even higher rates because of ever-increasing construction costs that result in greater capital investments ultimately reflecting in consumer bills? Have federal and state agencies truly determined the "safe dosage level" for human exposure to radiation or is there really any such level that is truly "safe?" Can radioactive wastes be safely stored, in some instances "for many thousands of years," or will such wastes be a "grim legacy" for future generations? Should Congress be allowed to commit taxpayers to "picking up most of the tab" for whatever personal injury and property damage might occur in the event of a catastrophic accident or should plant owners be fully responsible for any and all accidents that might happen, regardless of size? How valid is concern about "terrorist blackmail" the export of nuclear technology to underdeveloped foreign countries? Should there be a moratorium on the further use of nuclear power for commercial utility purposes or do the "benefits" outweigh the "positive risks?"
