Hall Kokal Saban know about them beating Vanderbilt, they know about them beating Miami of Florida. "And there are some people around the conference who are accusing us of being lucky and not being really that good. It'll be another chance to prove ourselves, although you also worry about embarrassing yourself in a game like this." JAMES HAS 52 players on the travel roster not including guard Ray Pfeister, quarterback Larry Hayes, or safety Nick Saban. Saban is the only one with a chance to play, the senior having resumed workouts following a broken leg suffered Oct.

28 at Northern Illinois. "Nick hasn't gotten the definite go-ahead, but we'll be taking him along," James says. "We'll be taking Ray and Larry along as managers." Pfeister missed much of the season with a knee injury while Hayes broke his arm in the opener against the University of Akron. Finest Tailoring in Town by Sol Cutrone That Fred Solomon is unbelievable with his quickness. "We'll have to keep the ball away from them.

They can score and our defense will be under pressure. We also have to figure out a way to get ourselves on the scoreboard. We'll have to pass against them. We won't be able to ram the ball down their throats." BUT AS powerful as Tampa might be, James is more than happy for the opportunity to play the 9-2 independent. "It's a very big game for us," he says.

"We're decided underdogs and there will be a lot of pressure on us. Everybody respects Tampn. They IPS'- I MEN'S FASHIONS I IN THE PLAZA BUILDING 2855 W. Stearns-Ro INCORPORATED By RICH ZITRIX Beacon Journal staff Writer KENT Don James is well aware his team has its detractors and he knows there are those who still grumble about Kent State University being the MidAmerican Conference football champion.

So James is going to see what he can do to stop this bad mouthing. And he could think of no better way than by having the Flashes do a job against Tampa Dec. 29 in the Tangerine Bowl at Orlando, Halt's been more than four weeks since Kent State beat Toledo 27-9 and won its first MAC title ever and a 6-4-1 record. Since then, James hopes his players have been keeping to their personal workout routines, while he and his staff have been watching films of Tampa and recruiting- THE coaches and players will come together again Monday as they prepare for Kent State's first bowl game since the Flashes lost to Delaware in the 1954 Refrigerator Bowl. There will be a meeting Monday, followed Tuesday morning by the start of two-a-day practices.

"We'll have at least six practices before we leave for Orlando," James says. "We'll play it by ear, seeing how the players progress and how the weather holds up." The team will fly from Ak- Talkington Wins Running Title Canton's Paul Talkington, representing the Akron Road-runners Athletic Club, won the national 25-kilometer roadrunner championship Saturday in San Diego. They'll practice Sunday morning and take in Disney World that afternoon, before having one of their major practices Christmas morning. On Tuesday, the Flashes will go back to afternoon practices until the Friday night game.

"We've got to first of all get our guys back to where we can get business done," James says. "We hope we can do that in a few practices. The layoff bothers me, but there's not much we could do about it. We had to recruit; they had to study. We were able to get' our offense together a couple times this past week, though." ONE OF the things James will have to determine is who will play quarterback junior Daryl Hall or freshman Geg Kokal.

"This is something else we'll have to play by ear," he says. "Daryl is still getting treatments for his bad back. If he's not at full strength, there's no question but that we'll go with Greg. We've told them they're both first team, however." James and Tampa coach Earl Bruce exchanged five game films, and James was impressed with what he saw. "Tampa's a fine team," he says.

"They're a lot like Louisville and San Diego State. They have a lot of good people at their skilled areas, especially at quarterback.
