Apparently, everyone who's staged "Dolly" assumes she's the most lovable character ever created. So they've contrived grand entrances and center stage bows calculated to do nothing but bring overwhelming joy to the members of the audience. That's presuming a bit too much.

But, if you do love Dolly you've got to admire the work of Jean Shepherd. She is an effective comedienne who is appropriately exuberant in this role. If she has a problem it's her singing voice, which is barely adequate. Still, she's able to carry off the role with ease. Gary Luter probably isn't old enough to play Dolly's prize catch, Horace Vander-gelder, but for the most part overcomes this handicap with his effective comedy style.

For some reason, parts of the set jet out to block the entrance to the front of the stage and the special runway constructed for this show. And the chorus, unfortunately, is directed to run on and off several times. It's confusion that brings to mind the starting gate at i muddy racetrack. 1 The effect is to detract from the business at center stage. Which is a shame, because the people out there are pretty effective.

I would LIKE to report that Jack Horner's last show after 14 years as director of the i Goodyear Musical Theater is a triuinph for the local stage. But CAN'T, because "Hello, Dtfly isn't. First off, the play's an old, wfr vehicle. If you haven't examined Thornton Wilder' somewhat less-than-! hilarious premise and script in "TheIatchmaker," in previous stagings of "Dolly" or in the iilm, you might find i them wildly amusing. USING a show with these modest Credentials, Horner's job isn'J easy.
