Taped concerts by the Cleveland Orchestra are being broadcast Sundays at 7 p.m. on WKSU-FM (89.7). Kent. Hear and Now young musicians, ages 13 to 18, began Wednesday on Hudson's Western Reserve Academy campus. Directed by William Appling of Cleveland, the six- week program again offers private instruction for singers and instrumentalists, ensem- ble performance experience and courses in music theory i and literature under Roger Miller, doctoral candidate in music at Case Western Re- serve.

New director of orchestral studies for SME this Summer is Dr. Martin-Beatus Meyer, conductor of the Washington- Idaho Symphony. Other facul- ty are drawn from the Cleve- land Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), and 1 Firestone and Oberlin lace of rubies and emeralds to assess the worth of individual gems. But special mention must be given the brilliant succession of ensembles in which Mozart's genius for musical characterization is ever-prominent; the glorious animation of Act with the sublime Trio and Fiordiligi's glittering aria "Come scog-lio" the distinctive sweetness of the vocal writing for the sisters, with its heavy use of thirds and sixths. As Katherine MacDonald has rightly observed, "Every musical resource has been used to point up the drama in all its delightful artificiality, laughing at operatic convention even while observing its rules." IF IT IS the endlessly delightful Mozart music, not Da Ponte's adroit manipulation of opera-buffa conventions, that makes "Cosi fan tutte" come alive on the stage, then director David Bamberger's Ober- Beethoven called the opera Immoral, while Wagner scoffed: "It is a proof of Mozart's greatness that to the dull and insignificant libretto of 'Cosi fan tutte' he was not able to compose such music as he did for for by this he would have shamefully desecrated music itself!" History has seen fit to take a much more charitable view of "Cosi," the third collaboration of Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte.

No one claims that the lightweight "trial of faithfulness" libretto is of the same high quality as those of "Don Giovanni" or "Marriage of Figaro," but all must concede the rich humanity and felicitous invention of Mozart's music are reasons enough for this sparkling opera buffa to remain a semi-regular fixture in the repertory. To attempt to isolate its musical beauties is a bit like trying to pull apart a neck lin Music Theater production, playing through next Sunday in Hall Auditorium, pays due respect to the opera's strongest suit. This is not to say the six attractive young principals do not enter into the spirit of amorous make-believe that is the Mozart-Da Ponte game plan. It is simply to say that the sheer vocal freshness and musicality they bring to the score is so much more impressive. Then too, thanks to the light touch and nimble pacing of Thomas Booth in the pit, the OMT student orchestra brings a welcome elan to the music that is essential if "Cosi" is to make full effect.

BAMBERGER has opted for a very stylized sort of musical drollery, with servants themselves changing the two-dimensional set pieces and everyone playing the humor as broadly as possible. Some of this busy business and comic exaggeration threatens to undermine the musical composure of the first act, but one learns to live with it. But again, the beauty and stylishness of the singing are what give this "Cosi" its allure. Both sopranos have no trouble soaring effortlessly over the concerted numbers. With his supple high baritone and winning stage presence, Charles Roe makes a fine Guglielmo. Though he begins a bit nervously, James Shrader negotiates Ferrando's music with welcome tenoral poise. Isackes' sets look rather cheap and ever so slightly tacky by comparison to his opulent "Madama Butterfly" decor, but they suit the self-conscious artificiality of the rest of the production. Mary McDonough's period costumes, however, are as la-cey and lovely as one could wish for. If you won't find yourself too offended by the innocent sexist sentiments which form the moral of this masterful period-comedy cannot be you should have a good time at Oberlin's "Cosi."
