Charles Brown Charles Samuel Brown, 80, of 128 Gracemont Drive, husband of Holly Coker Brown, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011 at Hospice House. Arrangements will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home Cremation Services. William Hawthorne DONALDS William Roosevelt Hawthorne, 74, of 937 Mount Lebanon Road, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011.

The family is at the home. Arrangements will be announced by Funeral Home of Belton. Elizabeth Kemp Elizabeth Ligon Kemp, 88, of 201-C Brooks Stuart Drive, widow of Chester Arthur Kemp, Jr. departed this life Friday, September 30, 2011 at her home. She was born December 13, 1922, a daughter of the late Annie Ligon and reared in the home of her grandmother, Mrs.

Ida Ligon Louden. She was educated in the Greenwood County schools. She was formerly employed as a caretaker for other homes and children. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church; a former member of the Senior Choir; and a member of the Aide Society No. 85.

Ms. Kemp was affectionately known as to those who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Chester A. Kemp III and her siblings. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Kemp Peterson (Johnnie), Joyce Kemp Robinson, Sheryl Kemp Bailey (Harris), all of Greenwood, SC, and Linda Kemp Anty of Lilburn, nine grandchildren, including two raised in her home, Ulandia Michelle Kemp and Eddie LeShawn Freeman (Andrea), both of Greenwood; eighteen great- grandchildren, one reared in the home, Jamal D.

Latimer; a great-great-grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be Wednesday, October 5 at noon at Springfield Baptist Church, 130 Springfield Church Road, Greenwood, with Rev. Andy Young officiating; with Rev. Kimberly Martin presiding; and Revs. Arthur Kemp and Joseph Caldwell assisting.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. to await the service hour. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family. Flower bearers will be friends of the family.

Ed Mitchell McCORMICK Edward Samuel Mitchell, 79, of 230 Candlewick Loop, McCormick, husband of Nancy Card Mitchell, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Hospice House, Greenwood. Born in Boston, MA, he was a son of the late Edward Samuel Mitchell, Sr. and Glad- ys Belyea Mitchell. He was a 1962 graduate of the University of Miami (FL), where he received a B.S. degree in both Electrical Engineering and Microelectronics.

He retired from Bell Labs following 34 years of employment, where he was a member of the technical staff. Mr. Mitchell was a US Coast Guard veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer and a member of McCormick United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Club. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Nancy, of the home; his son, Edward Samuel Mitchell, III and his wife, Maura, of Fairplay, MD; his daughter, Liane Venezia and her husband, Justin, of Lexington; two sisters, Sylvia Burke and her husband, Maurice, of Cape Cod, MA, and Phebe Abbott and her husband, Earl, of Nashua, NH; and was a loving Papa to his five grandchildren, Artemis Mitchell, Gavin Mitchell, Justina Venezia, Nicholas Venezia and Allison Venezia.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McCormick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Athon Arant, Sr. and the Rev. Bobbi Taylor officiating.

Honorary escort will be Jack Bushling, Jim Gunning, Brent Marston, Dave Menard and Gordon Waine. The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Thursday in the church social hall. com) is in charge of arrangements. Jeri Roberts ARLINGTON, Va. Jeri Nesbeth Roberts, 29, formerly of Greenwood, died October 1, 2011 in Fairfax, VA, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Greenwood, September 24, 1982, she was a daughter of Catherine Barre Roberts and the late Tony Franklin Roberts. Ms.

Roberts was a 2000 graduate of Greenwood High School; 2004 graduate of Lander University; and received her Degree in Forensic Psychology from Marymount University. She was currently a Crime Analyst for the F.B.I. in Quantico, VA. A member of Emerald Baptist Church in Greenwood, Ms. Roberts was also a member of the Futures Working Group (FWG) of the F.B.I., the Chi Sigma Christian Sorority and member and past president of the Psychology Club at Lander University.

Surviving, in addition to her mother of Greenwood; are grandparents, Frank and Darlene Roberts of Ware Shoals; aunt and uncle, Rick and Denise Hill of Ware Shoals; cousins, Jason and Valerie Davis of Ware Shoals, Barry and Alesia Vandiver of Anderson, Jay and Cassie Ngo of Greenwood and Stevie Hill of Ware Shoals; nieces, Maily Ngo and Sarahbeth Davis. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emerald Baptist Church, with Rev. Curtis Eidson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will members of the Greenwood County Department. The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. The family is at the home of her mother, 518 Willard Road, in Greenwood and at the home of her grandparents, 26 Sparks Avenue, in Ware Shoals. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening.

McCORMICK Mr. Javan Smith, husband of Mrs. Mildred Garrett Smith, died at his home, 183 Straight Gate Church Road on September 29, 2011. He was born May 1, 1951 in Bordeaux section of McCormick, to the late Javan Smith, Sr. and Mary Curry Smith and was the sixteenth of seventeen children.

Seven siblings preceded him in death; they were Mary Smith, Joseph Smith, John Smith, Viola Smith, Lucy Jackson, Margaret Talbert and Ida Mae Sanford. He graduated from Mims High School in 1970 and enlisted in the US Navy, serving from July 15, 1970 to September 16, 1971 and was honorably discharged. He married Mildred Garrett of Edgefield, SC, and to this union two children were born. He enjoyed gardening, watching sports and listening to music. He was always willing to help others in need and found great joy in spending time with family and friends.

He was a member of Chapel United Methodist Church of McCormick, SC. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mildred (Garrett) Smith; two children, Senfronia Smith of Beaufort, SC, and Javan Smith, III of Columbia, SC; eight sisters, Ophelia Williams and Martha Johnson of Detroit, MI, Edith Tennant and Jay Ann Banks of Miami, FL, Mary Alice Gilchrist and Effie Ruth Smith of Greenwood, SC, Jessie Mae Prince and Essie T. Smith of McCormick, SC; one brother, Ulysses Smith (Naomi) of McCormick, SC; one nephew, Thomas Smith, who was reared in the home; brothers- and sister-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services are Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Shiloh AME Church, with Rev.

Alexander Thomas and Rev. James Louden officiating. Assisting are Revs. Willie Garrett, Luther Garrett, Soloman Ware, Deloris Rapp and Mary Butler. Interment is in Chapel UMC Cemetery in McCormick.

Sarah Stuart LEXINGTON Sarah Anne Milford Stuart, 71, resident of 123 Erica Court, formerly of Greenwood, wife of David Stuart, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Agape Senior Living. Born in Greenwood, December 3, 1939, she was a daughter of the late John Logan Milford and Lorene Smith Milford Hipp. She was retired from Self Memorial Hospital, where she was a Medical Technologist for over twenty years. A lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Mrs.

Stuart was also a member of the Bible Sunday School Class of the church. Throughout her illness she was faithfully ministered to by members of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Lexington. Mrs. Stuart was preceded in death by her stepfather, James Wesley Hipp; stepbrother, Voight Hipp; stepsisters, Juanita H.

McCrorey, Willette H. Weatherly, Eleanor H. Walker and Thelma H. King. Surviving, in addition to her husband of forty-eight years, are three daughters, Lynn Stuart Barnes and husband Brian of Lexington, Laurie Stuart of Greenwood and Libby Stuart Tucker and husband Joey of Lexington; three grandchildren, David Lee Barnes, Ashley Christine Barnes and Jonathan Stuart Tucker, all of Lexington; sister, Martha Milford Drafts, also of Lexington; and a sister-in-law, Anne Hipp of York, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend John Hipp and Reverend Faye Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Joey Bagwell, Jerry Davis, Alan Cribb, Stephen Sanders, Scott Moore and Bal Ballentine. Carolyn Trupia WARE SHOALS Carolyn Annette Trupia, granddaughter of the late Hayward and Sybil Alverson, died October 2, 2011 at the age of 47.

She is survived by a daughter, Kayce Nicholson; father, Anthony Trupia; mother, Shirley Trupia; three brothers, Tony, Mark, and Chad; several nieces and one nephew. At eighteen, she was diagnosed with cancer and had been in remission for twenty- seven years. She touched the lives of those around her and will remain an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Born in Greenwood County, February 10, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Waddy Thompson and Maggie Sims Blum. She was formerly employed with Eastwell Sportswear and Fabriart. After her retirement, Mrs.

Young enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, listening to the Gaither Group and playing the piano. She was an avid Duke Basketball fan. Mrs. Young was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and had attended Emerald Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy B. Brown and Jean B. Brown and a brother, Waddy T. Blum, Jr. Surviving are a son, Ricky Young and wife Pam of Greenwood; three sisters, Martha Talbert and husband Ansel and Bettye Gunter, all of Greenwood and Mary Ann Edwards of McCormick; a brother, William Howard Blum of Elberton, GA; and three grandchildren, Matt Young, Marc Young and Megan Young.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Curt Eidson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
