22, 2007) at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 90. Mr. Dean was born in Mitchell, S.D., in 1916 and attended Grinnell College in Iowa, graduating with a degree in economics. He joined Ralston Purina as a clerk in the grain department at Checkerboard Square in 1938.

He held positions in plant management and commodity trading and was responsible for developing the international operations. He was named president of the International Division in 1958. In 1961, he was elected a vice president and director of the company. In 1964, he became president and chief operating of- cer. In 1968, he was elected chairman of the board and chief executive cer.

His directorships included Chevron Mercantile Bancorporation Webster University, the Business Council and Civic Progress, where he was elected president in 1977. Mr. Dean retired in 1982. That year, the Harvard Business Club of St. Louis honored him as business leader of the year, noting that during his tenure as CEO, the net sales increased an average of 22 percent a year and net ts in- creased an average of 26.5 percent a year.

Dean was a man of expansive Dr. William H. Danforth, a former director of Ralston Purina, said in a statement. an active CEO of Ralston Purina he was always looking for new approaches. He will be missed by his friends and the many institutions he W.

Patrick McGinnis, chairman of the present company, Purina PetCare said Mr. Dean was integral part of the emergence of Ralston Purina as a high performance global Mr. Dean was active in civic life while with Ralston Purina, as in the redevelopment of the LaSalle Park neighborhood. One of his biggest civic moves was Ralston purchase of a St. Louis Blues on the brink of the economic collapse in 1977.

The company also purchased the Arena, soon renamed the Checkerdome. Among the survivors are his wife, Gale Dean of St. Louis; a daughter, Donna Doan of San Diego; a son, David Dean of Niceville, stepdaughters Claire Halloran of Chicago and Ann Mullen of Duluth, four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
