one homesick to think of said one of English birth as he looked at a bunch of daffo dils from the green house morning 5 Tlie made a splen did record for attendance at meetings daringtiie past two A Merman Johnson has the best record He has sfe been in the council for five years and Cue month and only missed eight meet during that time of which five were specials and three regular On one of these occasions he was sick on two he was in attendance at the muni icipal league convention in St Paul and on the other occasion a special meeting was held of which he got no notice The record of attendance for the past two years is as follows: Johnson at 7' tended 55 meetings Zender 54 Bell 52 'wLewis 50 Padden 48 Officer 45 Lam bert attended 33 meetings but only held the office for part of the term He succeeded McNalley who attended 22 The combined attendance for this chair was 55 as high as the highest the work for two years The old coun cil did not die gracefully for Aldermen Zender anft Johhson crossed swords over the resolution introduced by the latter to investigate the illegal voting at the last city election Then when the new council came on the scene the alderman at large voted against con firming the appointments to theiSiice and made an attack on the officers Then the mayor threw some red hot shots The was called for seven so that the aidermen could go to the Booster meeting but all were not on time so the meeting was not called to order until about eight The new council lined up against the east wall to watch the last struggle of the old board Aiderman Officer was not present and lost the (ast opportuni ty he could have hw! of making a much anticipated maiden speech The old council passed a resolution fixing the width of all the streets of the city This subject has been argued 1 for years and now it has been disposed of for good Alderman Johnson submitted his re solution asking for an appropriatfbnnf $50 to be expended for the investigation of the illegal voting said to haie been done at tfoe city election The resolu tion read as already print eel in the Herald' except the amount was made $50 instead of $500 As soon as the re solution was read Alderman Zender moved that it be laid on the table and it was seconded by Aiderman Bell The resolution was intended to hunt out the Norma college students if any who illegally voted They are said to have voted solid for Mr Zender Alderman Johnson got the floor andsaid he did not think the resolution should be tabled "Our college is one of our most important institutions and if the students are guilty of illegal voting we should know it It is said that they have I dimt know If it is a be vv should know it If it is true the rongs should be rectified It is a duty wo owe to the institution to make an investigation The city has put a lot of money in it and it must put in mure what it should change "Thty are breeding political anarchy tlure should lie cha Mr JobBrAAi t' hou some college boys right to vote be cause they leave $90000 a year in our city The city has no right to grant the elective franchise for a money con sideration I do not blame Prof Boostrom I believe he gave these boys good advice in the morning but they went and paddled his own canoe Lewis: the lust meet ing I said I did not favor this reso lution I have changed my mind My reasons are the question came up the students have a right to I supposed they had such a right but I learn that the law says specicifically that they have no right The question will be continually coming up each year and now let us settle it for all Zender: were willing to allow them to vote at the primaries Now why appropriate money to investigate You may try to shut them out but come and vote just the The motion to lay on the table was lost by a tie vote Zender Btdl and Lambert voting for the motion and Johnson Lewis and Padden against Alderman Johnson then moved the adoption of the resolution and this was lost by the same vote Aiderman had no financial report for the past two years City Recorder: treasurer has not checked up with the 'recorder for the last two months but 1 can give you my last monthly Aiderman Bell moved that the books be audited and the reports for the past two years be published It se conded by Zender and carried unani mously Johnson: believe in giving this council a suitable funeral and I
