Newtka's mouth 'unsafe' Sticking one's head in the mouth of a two-ton killer whale has never been touted as one of the safest jobs around. And this appeared to be confirmed this week when for the second time this summer the Seven Seas sea life park's Newtka accidentally injured a trainer. Luckily, however, the incidents were not as bad as- they sound at first, and indications are they were not intentional on the whale's part. Park officials said the latest incident occurred when trainer Larry Smith stuck his head in Newtka's mouth and the animal apparently wavered in the water, unable to maintain its upright position along the pool.

This movement caused one of the whale's teeth to cut Smith's scalp as he withdrew his head. First aid was administered at the park, and no stitches were required, officials said. The earlier incident was slightly more serious, with trainer Bob Peek suffering a laceration over the eye. Peek now trains seals.
