The five genial loonies are dubbed by Patrick "fools of good heart" and that is his point: these harmless nitwits are full of decency, love and able comedy with Its own distinctive point of view. Patrick is concerned with a crew of five lovable mental cases cooped up In an elegant private Institution, and what happens to them when a scion of great wealth is committed MOST EVIL7 BLOOD-LUSTING DRACULA Pi OF ALL! 7 jHRJgi1 13 times THE ff: SCREAMS! pMl Wkfi Li p' iV St 9 LOT i.jdiLh,uimm i klfcli-Mirf for5? For two acts Patrick plays these two groups off against each other to excellent effect. His third act veers into sentimentality and postpones the end too long, however. The whole tone of the play shifts toward soap opera and the comic edge is a little blunted.

AS ACTED by the capable Canal Fulton crew, "The Curious Savage" was full of expert comic playing. Robin Morgan, Annette Hunt, James Coco, Todd Lasswell and the resourceful Mary Gordon make the five flighty inmates of "The Cloisters" human, despite their mental deficiencies. They play with excellent ensemble spirit and never let things become dull. Alexander Viespi, Nick Barry and Emily Ruhberg are properly vulture-like as the rich relatives whose only concern Is that their personal fortunes be served above all else. Marion Paone and Albert Ackel are suavely competent as staff members of the Institution.

Which brings us to the curious fact that Zasu Pitts, as the centerpiece for all this, gave a curiously flat performance, as if she were not too greatly interested in what she was about. There is a mine of character and personality in the part of Ethel Savage that Miss Pitts left largely untapped. Her low-keyed conception of the role was more appropriate in the sugary third act, where it made for a sentimental and sympathetic final curtain; but during the first two acts she was out of rapport with the lively acting going on around her. Maybe that was just the way she conceived the part, but at least one playgoer dissented. "TIIE CURIOUS SAVAGE" is good entertainment, but it also makes the extra effort, as does all really worthwhile comedy, to tell us something about people.

Those who see it this week at Canal Fulton will see it well served. Footnote: What would a Summer theater season be without at least one crisis? At 7:30 p. 70 minutes before show time, all the lights in the theater blew out. They were restored, only to conk out again 10 minutes before the first curtain. Candles were hastily summoned; so were electricians, who worked manfully.

The blackout lasted 42 minutes, delaying the start of proceedings until almost 9:20 p. m. The play was worth the wait.
