ViewOurSympathyGuideOnlineatwww.dierbergs.com Order24Hours By Michael D. Sorkin ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Helen Weiss, who became a divisional corporate vice president at the old Famous-Barr department stores at a time when men dominated the retail industry, died Tuesday (Sept.

9, 2008) at her home in Clayton from complications of colon cancer. She was 83. Ms. Weiss was the of Famous-Barr and most recently of stores in St. Louis from 1959 until her retirement last year.

Her job title put her in charge of handling public relations, community relations and special events for the department stores. But her passion was helping people. She used her u- ence at Famous to persuade her bosses at the department store chain to sponsor a host of worthy causes. She helped produce the rst major Fourth of July celebrations on the St. Louis riverfront, from 1964 until 1978.

They were the forerunners of the VP Fair. For decades, Ms. Weiss worked tirelessly to promote the annual St. Louis Book Fair, one of the largest and oldest charity book sales. The fair is a major supporter of disadvantaged children through the Nursery Foundation of St.

Louis, the rst interracial day nursery and child care center in Missouri. Ms. Weiss tooled around in her car, picking up new and used books, records, tapes, CDs and magazines from people all across town. But it was sponsorship that helped make the Book Fair a lasting success. The fair is now held at the West County Shopping Center each spring and remains a sponsor.

Ms. Weiss cared passionately about her causes, and colleagues say she fearlessly lobbied senior management. would just go down the hall and into their ces to make it recalled Debbie Podgorski, who worked for Ms. Weiss for 32 years. Ms.

Weiss lobbied to make facilities accessible for people with disabilities years before the law required it. During the 1970s, she got the downtown Famous store to hire both black and white Santas. After bought Famous in 2006, she urged the new owners to keep the downtown store open. A revitalized downtown needs a department store, she said. Ms.

liberal causes were well-known with upper management, and she was a longtime board member of the American Civil Liberties Union here. She proudly called herself a liberal, and when critics accused Democrats of being ad- vocates for and she would say: what is wrong with Ms. Weiss graduated from University City High School and Washington University. She is the widow of Richard M. Weiss, a producer and reporter at KSDK-TV.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m Friday at Central Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman Boulevard. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at 710 South Hanley Road, Apartment 17B, Clayton, and again after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Burial will be private. Among the survivors are a daughter, Jean Weiss of Minneapolis; a son, Richard H. Weiss of Richmond Heights; six grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, 454 Whittier Street, St. Louis, Mo.

Mohammed CHICAGO The imam who succeeded his father as leader of the Nation of Islam but abandoned its teachings of black supremacy and moved thousands of its followers into mainstream Islam died Tuesday. He was 74. Imam Mohammed went by both Warith Deen Mohammed and Wallace Muhammad. When his father, Elijah Muhammad, died in 1975, his son was named leader of the Chicago- based Nation of Islam, which promoted self-reliance and black supremacy, a belief that mainstream Muslims consider heretical. Imam Mohammed quickly abandoned that teaching and led the Nation toward orthodox Islam, emphasizing the message of racial tolerance.

He had been a friend of Malcolm who abandoned the Nation to embrace mainstream Islam before he was assassinated in 1965. Minister Louis Farrakhan, who broke with Imam Mohammed over the change, separately revived the old Nation of Islam. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DEATHS ELSEWHERE.
