A Cortner service is always a dignified, complete service within the means of Owned and operated by the Cortner Family State Forest Service takes over Heart Bar park The ownership of Heart Bar State Park, located eight miles east of the 'Barton Flats Visitor Information Center on Highway 38, has officially been transferred from the State of California to the U.S. Forest Service in a swap for more than 2,000 acres of federal land around the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area. The Forest Service took over the management of the state park, which lies north of the eastern portion of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, on May 1.

The land exchange, in, the planning process for more than three years, means the acquisition for the state of more than 2,000 acres of federal land around Silverwood Lake, located eight air miles west of Lake Arrowhead. Ownership of property around the lake formerly was divided between the federal and state governments and somewhat resembled a checkerboard. The lake is one of the reservoirs in the State Water Project. The difference in the land swap is the result of different values of the land, said a USFS spokesman, who added that land exchanges require equal total value the parcels. "This exchange will simplify administration of the lands and make the operation of both more efficient due to the consolidation of ownerships," said Bard Beutler, San Gorgonio District Ranger.

"In the long run, this should result in substantial savings to the taxpayers since the areas can be more efficiently managed." Beutler said that the change in ownership. should have little effect on the public using the two areas. Silverwood Lake and the surrounding recreation area will continue to be run by the state, as in the past, he said. Heart Bar will be run by the Forest Service with an emphasis on "dispersed recreational use instead of highly -developed recreation facilities," he said. The existing recreation facilities at Heart Bar State Park are now being run by the Forest Service, Beutler said.

The campground is open on a first come, first served basis with a $2 fee per campsite per night charged: The equestrian camp and Coon Creek group campground are available for group use. Both sites will accommodate a maximum group size of 40 people. The fee is $20 per night for each site. Reservations for the group campgrounds and information about Heart Bar State Park may be obtained by contacting the Mill Creek Ranger Station, Route 1, Box 264, Mentone, CA 92359, or by calling the station at 794-1123.
