"What we've heard from people is they want something else," Jordan said. "Bon Ton is such a popular group, it wasn't a difficult decision to make to put them as Friday's headliner.

Limpopo was the hot item." Other featured performers are the Hays Big Band, Kelly Hunt and Dulcimer Fusion. Old vorites include the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet, the Selby brothers, the Cones Sisters and legendary Kansas City jazz artist Jay McShann. Salina artists will perform as well, including Jazz Tangent and the Last National Band. Professor Gizmo, a one-man band who first played in 1978, two years before the first festival, will return to the children's stage. New artists on that stage include Bonnie Phipps and the Elastic band, who sing about monsters on vacation, and Eth Noh Tec, who last year toured Salina schools during a weeklong residency.

The duo from Eth Noh Tec hope to work with residents and the Salina Public Library on storytelling in the hopes of forming an area-wide storytelling guild. Regular members would meet to hone their skills and possibly perform for schools and library events. The workshop will be June 6. For registration and information, call Julie Lunneman at 825-0505. Art on tap, too The festival's art show will be featured as well, with 90 artists showing and selling their work.

Other highlights of the festival include: A comic strip mural created by Salina artist Steve Britt on the back of the tennis court wall. The Labyrinth A walking path created on the festival grounds, it is a tightly coiled design with an intricate series of loops and switch-backs. Glassblowing It will include a workshop, but be warned. "It's going to be as hot as heck," Benson said. "Kansas isn't the best place to have a glass workshop because it's so hot as it is." Sand sculpture What will the design be this year? No one is telling.

"We like to keep an air of mystery about us," said Curt Krob, who six years and 500,000 pounds of sand ago started the sculpture tradition. "A few years ago, someone asked me how I can stand it when all the kids destroy it. In the first couple days they ask, 'What is it going to Then halfway through they ask, 'When can we have "But when you see the smiles of the kids, you know they're having fun up there. That's what it's all about."
