Ain't Going Down (Til the Sun When one of those pesky newspaper columnists suggested a letter-writing campaign to WJW (Channel 8), urging the station to restore Dave Letterman to his rightful 11:35 p.m. tone slot, a bunch of you put fingertips to keyboard and went to work. Channel 8's director of operations, Lou Gattozzi, said Thursday that he answered 35 letters on Wednesday alone. He also had been "pretty well saturated with phone calls." But apparently he was not impressed. The station has no plans to change its schedule.

As you may know, Channel 8 is holding Dave hostage because Murphy Brown reruns are far more lucrative. The station gets to keep all the advertising revenue from a syndicated show like hers, rather than the small cut it gets from network programming like his. But that's a shortsighted approach, the same kind of misguided thinking that has doomed the national economy. What Channel 8's decision really means is this: Everybody in Northeast Ohio is losing half an hour of sleep every night, which means the Northeast Ohio work force is sleepy, which means productivity is declining, which means we will lose thousands more jobs to Mexico, which means the entire 17-county viewing area eventually will shrivel up and blow into Lake Erie. And then Channel 8 will have nobody left to broadcast anything to.

But enough about me. Now let's hear from people who sent copies to me. One of the more creative lobbying efforts came from John Marly of Tallmadge, who wrote the "Top Ten Reasons Why I'd Rather Watch Dave Than Murphy Brown at 11:35." Among his best: 70 percent of the CBS affiliates carry Dave at 11:35 get the picture? She's never interviewed Al Gore. Volume, volume, volume! The painters are done at the Ed Sullivan Theater. Another lobbyist, David Busch Bob NOT YT RILWT.

Although a public outcry in Detroit preserved Dave's 11:35 slot when the CBS station there threatened the same stunt, don't look for Channel 8 to cave in. Station sources say the financial difference is simply too great.

Unless, of course, Dave decides to kick in a little of his $14 million salary. Thereby qualifying for a Really Stupid Human Trick. Antenna fight Cleveland AM radio station WRMR does far better in the Akron ratings books than it has any right to expect. It ranks eighth here despite a signal that is little more than a rumor in much of Summit and Portage counties. Reason: Plenty of Akron-area residents are desperate for the big-band-era music the station programs.

There just isn't a lot of it left on the radio dial, mainly because the format is a tough sell to fldvcrtise rs If a WRMR (850-AM) proposal gets off the drawing board, though, the signal would come booming into Greater Akron. The station wants to erect as many as six transmission towers just east of Interstate 71 in Medina County's Granger Township. But WRMR faces a war. Neighbors in the rural, residentially zoned area are in no hurry to live next to a bunch of 300-foot towers. They made that clear last week during the first of a series of public meetings.
