The Beacon Journal Sunday, November 6, 1994, Page D13 Massillon 42, McKinley 41 For McKinley star, right really isn't all right But McDaniels says he can handle missing PAT that cost Bulldogs game it was to accept at the time considering it's the 100th game and my senior McKinley-Massillon game, will make me a stronger person. In fact, I know that because I know that I already am stronger for it And it's only an hour after the game." NOTEBOOK Sports Illustrated writer Leigh MontvtHe was in Stark County for three days to do a piece tne upcoming SI. Referee Fred Vfcaroi was doing his 20th consecutive McKjniey-Massillon game. Pro Football Hall of Farmer Bart Starr did the pregame coin toss at midfield. Honorary captains for the game were the captains of the 50th anniversary game, which included McKin-ley's Joe Pujazon and kv Lombard! along with Massillon's BiH Gable and Glenn Keller.

The 83 combined points easily surpassed the 55 points scored in the 1953 and 1991 games for most total points in a game in the senes. passes for 148 yards and one touchdown. And only a botched snap denied McDaniels the opportunity to win the game in regulation with a 50-yard field as the clock ran out. "I had the wind and I had the feeling that I was going to hit it," said McDaniels. "That would have been a dream way to end the game." Instead, it turned into a nightmare when he missed the extra-point.

"Maybe it's just that God thinks I'm the best person on this day to deal with this type of tremendous emotional tragedy," said McDaniels. "And he's given me this burden instead of giving it to somebody else. "I know I can handle it. And I know tiiis experience, as tough as And never was that fact more deeply embedded in McDaniels' mindset than yesterday afternoon at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in the 100th edition of the celebrated Massillon-McKinley series. The Massillon Tigers beat McDaniels' Bulldogs 42-41 in overtime.

The margin of difference turned out to be the extra-point kick McDaniels sent ever so slightly to the right of the right upright after the Bulldogs opened overtime with Kinta Mitchell's fourth TD run of the game. McDaniels figures he has kicked at least 100,000 extra-points from the time he started kicking six seasons ago as a seventh grader at Lehman. He has kicked extra-points any time he can find anybody, includ right," said McDaniels. "It wasn't good. I have no argument about that." The unfortunate aspect was that this one miss had to come at such a time.

It overshadowed an otherwise superb performance by McDaniels. If Rommel was the Desert Fox during World War then McDaniels was the Sand Turf Fox during this game. He exercised his field leadership in leading the Bulldogs up and down the field to score five touchdowns in regulation. McDaniels, who sports a 4.4 grade-point average and has an SAT score in the range of a star NFL running back's numbers, called a near-flawless game at quarterback. And he hit 14-of-20 ing mother Chris, to hold for him.

He has kicked extra-points in the morning. In the evening. And in the dark at Don Scott Field. He had missed only two extra-point attempts all season. He was a perfect 5-for-5 in the regulation time of this amazing game.

"Josh is the best person, no make that the only person, I would want to have kicking with the game on the line," said Thorn McDaniels. "Nobody could be more prepared for such a moment than Josh. I knew that all along. But I learned today just how really big of a person he is." It's just that it wasn't to be on this particular kick. "I just pushed it a little to the BYBOXLILLEY Bmnm Journal abiff uriler Canton McKinley senior Josh McDaniels never has had to be told what life is all about.

He's the son of the McKinley coach, Thorn McDaniels, who just happens to be the winningest coach in McKinley history as well as one of the most-maligned whenever the Bulldogs suffer their one or two losses of each season. "I've known for a long time that life simply isn't fair," said McDaniels the younger. r7T i Rivals Massillon gets a passing grade in overtime Continued from Page Dl XX game," said Rose, who recorded his first win in the series in three tries. "It seemed like whichever team didn't make the mistakes and had the ball last was going to win." Rose was dead right on both counts. The Tigers, who committed only 12 turnovers in their first nine games, played error-free football.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, committed two turnovers. The most costly was a fumble of a high, short kickoff that Massillon senior safety Steve Griffith recovered at the McKinley 25 midway through the second quarter. "That was the big mistake that you simply can't have in a big game like this," said Thorn McDaniels. "We made it. And it made the difference." Oh, it didn't kill the Bulldogs right there. Josh McDaniels ran a brilliant 2-minute offense and drove the Bulldogs 65 yards for the tying score. But instead of a 14-7 halftime lead, the Bulldogs had to settle for a 14-14 tie.

The Tigers sensed they had the momentum. And they opened the second half with a trick play, a flea flicker. Spencer handed off to Ashcraft, who promptly flipped the ball back to Spencer. Spencer unloaded a bomb that Redrick caught off his shoulder pads in strike at the 20 and took into the end zone for a 62-yard TD. Redrick celebrated by throwing his wristbands into the crowd.

That put the Bulldogs in a catch-up mode forever. They did manage to tie the game 35-35 when McDaniels hit Shakeer Abdullah for an 8-yard TD off a brilliant play-fake with 1:18. But even at that, it seemed like McKinley was playing from behind all the time. And even though the Bulldogs opened overtime with a 1-yard TD run by Kinta Mitchell, their lead was only 41-35 when the extra-point kick was missed. "We saw that as our opening," said Spencer.
