Associated Press Favored Netherlands rallies for 2-1 victory over Saudis. Brazil beats Russia Asmriatfd Pna For months, Saudi Arabia eagerly awaited its first foray into theWorld Cup. Then the team put itself in position for an upset of epic propor-" tions by drawing The Netherlands in the first round. On Monday night, reality set in as the Netherlands rallied to beat Saudia Arabia 2-1. Gaston Taument scored the game-winner in the 86th minute off a mistake by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Deayea.

The goal set off a delirious celebration by the partisan crowd of 52,535 at RFK Stadium in Wash-' ington, D.C. The Dutch team, known as "The Oranje," received boisterous support from thousands of orange-clad fans, some in wooden shoes. A full brass band, accompanied by a brass drum, played throughout the game. Earlier Monday, Brazil beat undermanned Russia 2-0 at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif. "There's still a lot more the team can do," Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said after Romario and Rai scored and Brazil dominated.

Brazil, one of the favorites, needed a strong early showing to answer criticism that it is not on par with three previous championship teams. Saturday in the semifinals of the University of AkronNews India-Times intercollegiate cricket tournament Akron advanced with a weekend victory over the University of Kentucky, Lexington. Akron scored 131 runs in 25 overs. Kentucky scored 112 in 25 overs and lost 9 wickets. Penn State advanced with a weekend victory over Notre Dame University. Penn State was 125 for 6 in 25 overs.

Notre Dame was 65 all out in 21 overs. The semifinal match will be played at Buchtel Field. It is the sixth year for the tournament. Russian defender Sergei Gorlukovfch (in striped shirt) holds Brazilian midfielder Mauro SirVa (front) during Monday's Group first-round match at Stanford Stadium. Brazil defeated Russia 2-0.

set up Romario for the first goal, in the 27th minute. Capitalizing on a fifth comer kick in a five-minute span, Bebeto lofted the ball over the Russian defense. Romario shook off defender Vladisav Ternavski and deflected the ball with the outside of his right foot into the right corner past goalkeeper Dmitry Kharin. Kharin kept things close until Romario was pulled down by Ternavski in the penalty box in the 53rd minute. Rai took the penalty kick, the first of the tournament, and put it into the right comer.

WALKING WOUNDED The United States could be without starters Eric Wyn-atda and C4audk Reyna when it plays Colombia on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Wynalda, who scored the goal on Saturday that gave the Americans a 1-1 tie against Switzerland, has not practiced because of a persistent rash: that doctors believe is an allergic reaction to food compounded by nerves. Reyna, two-time college player of the year, has a Els made to play the ball from where it landed. "I made a mistake. He didn't have that bad a lie in the taller grass.

But coming out a couple of club-lengths allowed him to maneuver the ball better," Holland said. "In the past, we had some (equipment) that are not movable," Holland added. "Nobody likes to make a mistake, especially with something like that. But that's what happened. I feel bad about that." Els also got a big break on No.

17, although there was no controversy about whether the ruling was correct. There was, however, dispute about where the USGA placed the drop area. On the hole, a 315-yard uphill par-4, Els tried for the green, but he instead hit the ball far left behind a grandstand, another "temporary movable obstruction." Els was allowed to move to a drop area that was in front of the grandstand, nearer to the hole and in an improved position. He made an easy par on the hole. Players used that drop area all week, but there were many questions about whether it should have been to the side of the grandstand from an equal distance from the green.

Bob Rosburg, one of ABC-TVs on-course reporters who was on the hole at the time, told his audience that, "I don't think this is right." Jack Nicklaus, who was in the booth after finishing his round, agreed. and then engaged in match play with Roberts the rest of the way, as Montgomerie faltered. Play reached its nerve-wracking best down the stretch. On No. 17, Roberts took the lead briefly by sinking a 15-foot birdie putt.

But Els, on top of him, followed with one of his own from 10 feet to tie the match. Both golfers made tough pressure-packed putts on No. 18 to force the sudden death. Els, in becoming the first foreign champion in this event since Australia's David Graham in 1981, won despite some of those late-Sunday and early-Monday woes and despite the fact that he struggled all day, hitting only six-of-16 fairways and constantly testing the high Oakmont rough. "That shows guts," Roberts said afterward.

And, remember, he's talking about a 24-year-old. Roberts, 38, a native of San Luis Obisbo, now residing in Memphis, is the ultimate tour journeyman. He turned pro in 1978, joined the PGA Tour in 1981 and has been in Tour Qualifying School to get his card a total of six times, making it four times. In parts of 13 years on tour, he had never won a championship until taking the Nestle Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, on March 20. That qualified him for his first World Series of Golf appearance Aug.

25-28 at Firestone Country Club. This was a chance for him to USGA official admits he erred on the first of two rulings on Sunday By Tom Gaffney Beacon Journal staff writer Oakmont, The two favorable rulings given Ernie Els in Sunday's final round of the U.S. Open were still major topics of conversation during the tournament playoff especially considering that Els went on Monday to win the Open title. Of special concern was the admission by a United States Golf Association rules official that he erred on the first of them. ESPN, in fact, devoted early portions of its televised coverage to the two situations, showing replays of Els on both of the Oakmont Country Club holes in question, No.

1 and No. 17. On the first hole, Els put his drive into the deep rough on the left. A television camera mounted on a forklift blocked his view of the green. Dr.

Trey Holland, the rules official on the hole, ruled that Els was entitled to a free drop since the forklift was a "temporary movable obstruction." Els thus got out of the rough with a drop that ended on grass well-trampled by the gallery. Els got the ball on the green from there but three-putted for a bogey. Holland, 44, a urologist from Indianapolis, later said the fork-lift should have been moved and pulled right hamstring. "I have faith that both of them may be able to play," said U.S. coach Bora Milirdnovic.

The United States is i-7 against Colombia. TV RATINGS Television ratings for the 1994 World Cup opener were more than three times better than for the 1990 opener. Friday's game between Germany and Bolivia received a 2.2 rating on ESPN and was viewed in 1.39 million homes. Saturday's 1-1 tie between the United States and Switzerland earned an overnight rating of 5.8 in major U.S. markets and beat the U.S.

Open golf tournament, which got a 5.0 overnight. TOUCH OF HOME Jim Donovan, sports anchor for WKYC (Channel 3) did the play-by-play Monday for the Brazil-Russia game on ESPN. HIGH AND DRY The Football Association of Ireland appealed to Central Floridians for tickets to Friday's Ireland-Mexico match for 300 stranded Irish fans. The enthusiasts saved for two years so they could see their team in the World Cup. But when they got to Orlando, they discovered their London-based tour operator hadn't covered the cost of all the hotel rooms, airfare and game tickets.

Sportex, the tour operator, could not be reached. A FIRST FOR ELS None of Monday's finalists had ever won a playoff before. Emle Els lost a three-way playoff in the 1993 Holland Swazi Classic on the South African Tour. Colin Montgomerle lost in the 1992 Volvo Masters and the 1991 Volvo PGA Championship. Loren Roberts had never been in a playoff.

ONE OUT OF THREE The playoff was the 31st in the 94-year history of the U.S. Open. It also was the eighth time that three players were involved. The last one of those came in 1963, when Julius Boros, who died last month in Florida, fired a 70 to beat Jacky Cupit (73) and Arnold Palmer (76) on the Championship Course at The Country Club of Brookline, Mass. The last playoff came in 1991, when Payne Stewart shot a 75 to edge Scott Simpson (77) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

The last sudden-death playoff came in 1990 at Medi-nah Country Club in Medinah, when Hale Irwin beat Mike Donald on the first extra hole. THE FOREIGN INFLUENCE For the first time ever, foreign golfers won both the U.S. Open and the Masters in the same year. Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain won the Masters in April. GONE HOME OR WORKING Attendance Monday was estimated at between 8,000 and 10,000, a long way from the 22,500 on Thursday through Sunday.

Many of the visiting fans went home after the final round Sunday. Meanwhile, local fans had the 9-to-5 grind. Ticket sellers outside the gates were not having much luck. One man had about 50 of them and said he had sold five all day. THE RANKINGS: The Sony World Rankings, which is considered the measuring stick of the world's golfers, were released after the playoff.

Champion Ernie Els was No. 7, Colin MoiTtgomerie No. 9 and Loren Roberts No. 22. elevate his status in the world, but there was not consternation that he couldn't.

"I never gave up on myself. I will never give up on myself," Roberts said about his career in general. "I always thought I had a chance to be up there. "If you told me Friday I was going to be in a playoff Monday, I would have been happy. Believe it or not, that's the way I feel.

I enjoyed myself and I'm looking forward to being here again." Montgomerie, 30, a member of the PGA European Tour who won the 1993 European Order of Merit, was never a factor Monday. He registered double-bogeys on both the second and third holes, and later had bogeys on two par-3 holes (Nos. 6 and 8) to finish at 6-over 42 on the front. Another double-bogey on No. 11 turned the playoff into a two-player race.

To put his round into perspective, Montgomerie was exactly at 63 Johnny Miller's Open record set in 1973 with four holes to play. But Montgomerie would not let one bad round however important spoil his week. "I had a very good tournament. I gave it my best shot I'm not despondent at all," said Montgomerie, who finished third in the 1992 Open at Pebble Beach. "I'm looking forward now to the British Open." Under USGA rules, Roberts and Montgomerie shared second-place money, with each getting $141,827.50.

Northfield leaders (Through June 17) DRIVERS Open Els is first champion since 1981 Continued from Page Dl went three feet past. But he calmly made it for a par that gave him the Open title. "I knew I was in trouble, but I still thought I had a chance to get it up-and-down," Roberts said. "I didn't want to leave that last putt short. I might have hit it a little too hard.

"Ernie's got a lot of game. He's long and putts well. That works well for champions." Els also showed some amazing resilience after collapsing down the stretch Sunday and blowing up early in Monday's round. On Sunday, he got bogeys on two of the final three holes, essentially playing his way into an extra day's work. On Monday with temperatures again in the 90s and the Oakmont greens as quick as ever Els fell behind immediately with a bogey on No.

1 and a triple-bogey on No. 2 when he had an Unplayable lie and three-putted. This is a potential champion? "After the second hole, I didn't know where I was going. I thought, 'What am I doing out Els said. But he got a birdie on No.
