Monday, December 17. 1962 Akron Beacon Journal 31 Carr, Educator, Dies At 74 CANAL FULTON Mrs. Cora B. Carr, onetime Canal Fulton Elementary School principal who taught 42 years in the area, died. Sunday in Massillon City Hospital.

She was 74 and lived here on E. High st. Mrs. Carr retired in 1959 after a teaching career that began. at Maximo in Stark County and was climaxed in 1951 when she was named school principal here.

She served in that post until 1956. ALWAYS active in munity organizations, Mrs. Carr was a trustee of the Canal Fulton Library long Board and was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Hill and Hollow Garden Club and Chapter 180, Order of Eastern Star. She was born in Canal Fulton and was graduated from Oberlin College. She also taught in Akron, Manchester and 1 Canton schools.

SHE leaves her husband, H. J. Services will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday in the Swigart Funeral Home, the Rev.

Francis I. Moyer officiating, with burial Canal Fulton Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Tuesday.

In lieu of other remembrances, friends are asked to donate to their favorite charities. BERNICE H. GIVEN BARBERTON Bernice H. Given, widow of former Barberton City Council president clerk Richard Given, died Sunday in her home after a brief illness. She was 73.

Mrs. Given, of 329 E. Ford had lived in Barberton 45 years. She was born in Fresno, O. Mrs.

Given was a member of First Methodist Church, Barberton Order of Eastern Star and the Tuesday Study Club. She leaves a son, Robert of Eglin AFB, a daughter, Mrs. Doris Branca of Canoga Park, five grandchildren, and sisters, Mrs. Guida Cameron of Doylestown and Mrs. Gladys Renfrew of Coshocton.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p. m. in the CampfieldHickman Funeral Home, the Rev. Merrill Chaffee in charge. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Tuesday. BEVERLY A. WILCOX STREETSBORO Services for Beverly A. Wilcox, formerly of 792 Rt. 303 here, will be Tuesday at 2 p.

He was 75. He leves a son, Harold of Suffield; daughters, Mrs. Betty Wolf of Akron and Mrs. Dorothy Cook of Suffield; 10 grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Elva Wise of Randolph.

Her brother-in-law, Robert Tompkins, is a president of Mogadore School Board. Thomas, of the Inman st. address, told police he and Miss Murphy had parked in the garage about 2 a. m.

Sunday. He said he was driving Miss Murphy's car and that closed garage doors but left the motor running. POLICE said Thomas and Miss Murphy apparently fell asleep. Thomas awoke about 6:30 a. m.

and found Miss Murphy unconscious. Thomas and his father operate Bus Stop Inn on Cole av. Miss Murphy was a 1950 Mogadore High School graduate, a cheerleader and char. ter member of the school's honor society. Before working at Roadway Express she was employed by Canton Road Furniture Co.

She was a Sunday School teacher at Mogadore First Christian Church and a member of the Bachelors and Spinsters Club of Akron. Surviving besides her parents are brothers, James, Tom, Mike, Larry and Paul, all of Mogadore, Ken of Cuyahoga Falls and John of Medina; ters, Mrs. Dolores Davis and Mrs. Robert Tompkins of Mogadore and Edna at home, and a grandfather, William Murphy of Arcola, Ill. Services will be at 3 p.

Marshall Dale Robinson, 49, of 1463 Harvard flew 33 missions as a turret gunner on a bomber with the 8th Air Force in Europe. A staff sergeant, he was holder of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. His wife Era is clerk at Towslee Elementary School and Beacon Journal reporter in Brunswick. Services will be at 11 a. m.

Lauris Norstad will direct the United States' new space satellite system after he retires as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, informed sources claim. The sources said Philip L. Graham, president of the Washington Post and chairman of the board which set up the system, persuaded the 55-year-old Norstad to take the job. Norstad had been scheduled to leave the NATO post Oct. 1 but stayed on because of the Cuban crisis.

Train Kills Two Taking Shortcut BOGOTA, N. J. (UPI) Two young sisters were struck and killed by a train engine Sunday when they took a shortcut home from ice skating. Marna Adams, 12, and her sister, Colleen, 8, were on their way home to change their damp clothing before attending a movie at their church hall. Instead of using a pedestrian overpass of the New York Central railroad tracks, the two had decided to take a shortcut across the tracks.

"I SUGGEST," Thomas wrote, "that in the call of such a meeting for whatever purpose, the Democratic members of the Legislature also be invited. "They are the ones who carry the ball to enact the Democratic platform and yet no Democratic state chairman or governor has ever lifted a finger to give us any recog. nition or financial help when running for, election." Hinting that stronger leadership on the state level would have resulted in a better Democratic showing in the last election, Thomas concluded: "I feel that we should not be treated like orphans and left out of our State Democratic family organization at any time." Dr. Laird Enters Plea Of Innocent CLEVELAND (P) Arthur W. Laird pleaded innocent today to first degree manslaughter and narcotics violations that grew out of a probe into the death of a woman in the 75-year-old plastic surgeon's office.

Common on Pleas Judge Daniel H. Wasserman continued the $25,000 bail, which the doctor has not yet been able to make. Ralph Ammerman, attorney for the doctor, told the court it was an oversight that his client did not have a tax stamp for dispensing narcotics. Cuyahoga Grand Jury indicted Dr. Laird on 11 counts Friday.

The manslaughter charge involves the death Dec. 3 of Mrs. Joan Dileno, 25, from an overdose of a local anesthetic during a plastic surgery operation in Dr. Laird's office in Cleveland Heights. George Merrell, Ex-Envoy, Dies LONDON (P) George R.

Merrell, former U. S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, died in a London hospital Sunday after a stroke. He was 64. Merrell was in London visiting a sister Ruth, an administrative assistant to Ambassador David Bruce.

(UPI) Seventy -four of the University of Wisconsin's 86 third year medical students have signed pledges to give up cigarets or to refrain from starting to smoke as an example to the public. Dr. Robert J. Samp, assistant professor of surgery in the school's cancer research division, said he urged the pledges which were returned to his tumor conference class Saturday. Samp, who quit cigarets five years ago after smoking for 10 years, is also medical director of the Wisconsin Division of the American Cancer Society.

Samp said 10 of the future doctors did not sign a pledge because they felt they could not stop smoking or else they objected to such a group action. Samp said he started the pledges after being asked by many young smokers why doc. tors smoke "if smoking is dangerous."
