Mike Jones, president and general manager of the ABC affiliate, said Wednesday that WAKC has created a new position, vice president of news, and has hired Bob Tayek, managing editor of WKYC (Channel 3), to fill it.

Tayek, who joins the Akron station Monday, has signed a lengthy contract, Jones said. Tayek was with WKYC three years and previously was in management positions at Cleveland radio stations WWWE (1100-AM) and WERE (1300-AM) and Cleveland's ABC affiliate WEWS (Channel 5). Mark Williamson, who remains as news director and anchor, also will head an investigative reporting unit, Jones said. Williamson said he and Tayek, whom he has known for 20 years, "will be a good management team." Jones said that Ana Perez, who was assistant station manager for eight years before becoming the on-camera weather forecaster, also will be developing environmental news reports in the weeks ahead. "I cannot underscore how important news is at WAKC," Jones said.

WAKC's purchase April 18 by ValueVision, a Minneapolis-based home-shopping network, has caused speculation that news would be downplayed or eliminated and that the station would become a 24-hour shopping channel.
