He understands what working is all about. The singer of Polish descent started professionally three years ago in Reno. After spending all that time on the road since his first gig, he is back. Lee is appearing nightly -from 10 p.m. to the early morning hours in the newly-opened Kings Inn.

"I started at the Sands (in Reno)," the 26-year-old performer recalled during a break from rehearsal, "Then I went on the road all over the Western states." He also recalled he sang in the Miss Nevada Pageant three years hence. "You know, singing 'Here She he said, grinning. He knows why he went on the road. "To get experience, to learn what it's all about," he said, somberly. "I want to work in substantial places.

What's the use of coming to Reno to work the same places I've been working on the road. "Timewise, I'm relatively young in this business. I've made my blunders, but I try to pick up what I can." Lee describes himself as a singer of show rock, soul music and top 40. He doesn't cater to underground music. clowning around.

After getting out of college I decided to try singing. I decided I liked it and I've been going at it ever since. "Things are going well and I'm, hoping we're going forward and not backward." While P.J., or Pajamas, as some people try to call him, sings, he is backed up by a trio with "the joke name we have the 'Bet Your Boots They include Joel Nelson on keyboards, Greg Yost on bass and Lonnie Hunt on drums. Lee hopes to have a fourth member on lead after the first of the year. He says he is getting a big kick out of playing the Kings Inn.

"I don't mean this as a plug or anything, but Allen (Bergendahl, the owner) is super to work for. He cares about you. "I think the club's got a real good future with him there." "I figure if I can help them they can help me with my career. Each hand washes the other." His immediate goal is to get into the cabarets. "I want people to get into the mood of dancing when they can't do, like the Checkmates and Paul Revere and the Raiders do." But he understands what he has to do to get there.

J. Lee "I dunno, I just couldn't get into that." He classifies himself as a different type of performer. "I can-be very excitable or I can be very casual. It depends on how I feel." Elaborating, he said, "I sing a slow song like I think it should be sung; when I sing rock and roll, I get excited and dance all over the stage. "I just try to fit the mood of the song." He hasn't had any formal training.
