It's not so exciting for parents, though. On this DVD, Larry and friends have become traditional cartoon characters.

In this episode, Larry-Boy fights a Wagnarian rich person who kidnaps her favorite yodelers. The message: Don't be materialistic and greedy. Amen to that, especially in the holiday season. The cartoon carries over the series' wit and vigor; extras include a game your family can play and a bonus cartoon. One drawback: A wise teacher named Bok Choy is an Asian stereotype.

"Joshua" sinks in its own ineptitude. Based on a series of novels about a gentle Jesus in the 20th century, the film shows "Joshua" the carpenter rebuilding a Baptist church in a small town and carving a statue of Peter for a doubting Catholic priest (F. Murray Abraham). This "Joshua" is a 1970s Muzak Messiah he even plays the guitar. The direction falls below the level of movie of the week, and the characters are so poorly explored that you don't feel much when "Joshua" helps them out.

The Christian rock band Third Day makes an appearance. Extras include a series of interviews with the filmmakers and the cast that are much better than the actual film. I applaud efforts of independent filmmakers to work around the Hollywood system be they secular or Christian. "Larry-Boy" succeeds at making its message pleasing to children and adults; "Joshua" aims at adults and misses entirely. Instead of copying television films, Christian movie companies need to find new ways to get their message across, just as underground filmmakers did in the 1960s.

Kwanzaa book Kwanzaa is something many parents and children know of, but many don't know exactly what it means or how it's celebrated. A new book, "Kwanzaa Kids" (Puffin Books) by Joan Holub and illustrated by Ken Wilson-Max, takes readers through the holiday day by day.

The African-American holiday begins Dec. 26. Kwanzaa lasts seven days one for each principle: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. The lift-the-flap book shows how a family carries out each of those ideas. Teens onDna Census Bureau data indicate that between 1998 and 2001 the proportion of teens (ages 14-17) using the Internet increased from 51 percent to 75 percent.

The proportion of "tweens" online (ages 10-13) increased from 39 percent to 65 percent. Teens with Internet access at home typically spend 46 minutes each day online almost as much as reading books (49 minutes), playing video games (55 minutes) or talking on the telephone (60 minutes). TrVnen hi Rome' There's something about the Olsen twins that fascinates virtually every female that I know between the age gf 1 and 16. My 4-year-old, a big fan of the Mary-Kate and Ashley "parties" video series, immediately connects with our 1 1 -year-old neighbor whenever the twins come up. The twins, now 16, have moved into more adult fare (or at least late teen material).

In "When in Rome," the girls (playing Charli and Leila) travel to Italy Jfir urr-THf-Fit teat Wff wi include outtakes and a behind-the-scenes segment, which give us a glimpse into what it's like to be the world's most famous twins. Bottom line: A must-have for the 8 to 1 6 female viewer; not too annoying for parents. Movie grade: Extras grade: Overall: Rated: Length: 85 minutes Jennifer Greer, Calendar correspondent tarry-Boy: The Yodelnapper' Two recent DVD releases key into a burgeoning "underground" Christian filmmaking movement. In "Larry-Boy: The Yodelnapper," VeggieTales takes one of its jolliest characters Larry the Cucumber and places him in a mock-Batman cartoon adventure. In "Joshua," Tony Goldwyn, usually cast as the evil Yuppie gets to play a back-again Jesus.

"Larry-Boy" is by far the better bet. to be summer interns at a fashion design firm. Along the way, the girls both find love interests and, of course, stop a villain trying to ruin the company. The movie is pretty standard straight- to-video material but should be a hit with older Mary-Kate and Ashley fans. My 4-year-old was "grossed out" by the kissing and became bored about 30 minutes into the movie (the typical length of the party videos).

Parents watching will be treated to some fabulous travel video shots of Rome (which take up about a third of the movie) if they can stand the odd camera angles. My advice: Take a motion-sickness pill before putting this one in. The movie's ending seems off, given all the hints that the villain really wasn't a villain after all.
