Upon their arrival, Kent's Golden Flashes epitomized the few (quarterbacks), the proud (coach Pete Cordelli was hopefully pride-ful coming out of camp) and, maybe in discipline, the Marines.

But by the time they departed, with a 35-0 licking at the hands of Kentucky's Wildcats before 55,800 at Commonwealth Stadium, the Flashes were Just paltry practitioners of past MAC efforts. Beginning with Coach Bill Curry's first year at the helm, Kentucky had beaten some of the best the MAC has to offer 20-17 over Central Michigan in 1990, 23-20 over Miami in 1991, 21-14 over Central Michigan in 1992. Need we point out that Kent's losing margin nearly tripled the combined margin (13 points) of the last three MAC teams to lose here? Kentucky salted the victory with 21 fourth-quarter points after building a 14-0 lead. "We just got beat by a better football team," Kent coach Pete Cordelli said. "AIJ the way around, they have better athletes at the University of Kentucky than we have at Kent State.

NEBRASKA 76, NORTH TEXAS 14 prove. Kentucky, that it is not the SEC's worst team as preseason pollsters have predicted. Kent, that it could play despite the fact three of its first four quarterbacks are out with injury. Kentucky may have proved its prowess but the verdict is still out on Kent, which plays MAC leader Akron in the Acme-Zip Game at the Rubber Bowl Saturday night. Quarterback Mike Acie, playing in just his first collegiate game and a survivor after the injury bug bit Kent's first, third and fourth signal-callers in fall drills, received a rough welcome to NCAA Division I-A football.

Kent's leading ground-gainer, Acie carried 12 times for 38 yards, and that included one run of 23 yards.

"For his first college game, Acie played a helluva game," Cordelli said. "For as much pressure as that defense put on, he handled it very well. "Acie matured a lot and did some good things. That was encouraging." As much as anything, the game showed that while water may span three-fourths of the Earth's surface, Kentucky's defense covers the rest. Kentucky's swarming defensive unit limited Kent State to 177 total yards, 112 through the air and 65 on the ground, and did not allow Kent past the Wildcats' 38.

Meanwhile, Kentucky rolled up 506 yards (309 on the ground, 197 through the air) and doubled Kent's first-down total (22-to-ll). It was the first time Kent had been shut out in five games, back to the seventh game of the 1992 season when the Flashes fell 35-0 at Central Michigan. It also was Kent's 34th season-opening loss fifth consecutively against 30 victories and seven ties, and its fifth consecutive loss to Kentucky in as many games. Clark 1-14-1-2). W.Caratoi Vicencio fumbled the snap, tried to pass the ball, found no receivers, then fled to his right and made the end zone. Malone led 16-0. The lead didn't last long, however. Takah, who was 25-for-38 for 246 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, ran 10 yards for a score with just eight seconds left in the half. Smith kicked the conversion and it was 16-7 at the half.

"He's not an exceptional quarterback," said Palmisano of Bethany's Takah, "but he's a gutsy kid and he gained confidence as the game went along. He and his receivers are mature enough to get the job done." Takah hit receivers Roger Fur-bee and Rick Beckett each with a 10-yard scoring pass in the fourth period, the second giving the Bisons a 20-16 lead, its first of the game. However, Palmisano inserted Rueben Ortega into the game at quarterback and his first pass attempt was a strike over the middle to Houseman who carried it 76 yards for a score and a 23-20 Malone lead with 5:16 left. But Takah again brought Bethany back. His 38-yard pass to Brian Dickman to the Malone 27 set up Smith's game-tying field goal.

Ironically Smith earlier missed attempts from 30 and 38 yards. "We need to feel good about this," said Palmisano, "because we did play well at times. We had them on the ropes and let them get away. "I can't blame the offense too much. We only had a short time to prepare and put in just five plays.

We'll add more as the season goes on, but if we had given the team more plays for today's game, we might have blown a fuse." Pasting AS, Covkiflon 2444. Hants 3 03 13 1746 1-24-5. Dean 16-22-1-237. Malone falters in 2nd half in first-ever game Continued from Page El end in a victory either even though victory was well within reach. Bethany, long the doormat of the Presidents Athletic Conference, rallied behind a scrawny-looking, but gutsy junior quarterback, Dan Takah, to put 16 points on the board in the fourth quarter, including a 41-yard field goal by Tom Smith with 2:19 left that produced a 23-23 tie. "I thought we were the better team, but when we went up by 16-0 we let them off the hook and they got the edge," said Palmisano. Malone scored 16 points in the second quarter and seemed well on the way to the school's first victory in its first-ever game. For the record: quarterback Shane Nalepa scored the school's first touchdown, on a run of 5 yards, capping a 79-yard, 17-play drive.

Jack Vicencio's pass to back Mark Houseman produced a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead. The holder for kicker Scott Bennington, Vicencio rose up, ran to his right and fired a strike to Houseman. Vicencio got his second 2-point-er after fullback Dan DeGeorge, the Pioneers' leading rusher with 40 yards in eight carries, scored from 8 yards out with 5:35 left in the half. But this time it wasn't planned. Receiving AS, Denlson 2-10.

The Bulldogs traveled hours to Seymour to beat King's Academy 38-0 Friday night, snapping a string of 69 losses. "They were extremely happy and proud," coach Clay Dixon said Saturday from home. "But there was a pause there before we all realized that it had happened." Dixon said the team spent the night in Knoxville, celebrating until about 5 a.m. A police and rescue squad escort, with sirens and flashing lights, accompanied them home Saturday morning. "They were a little tight.

It was the first game of the season and they knew what was at stake," Dixon said. "We stuck together, played as team and didn't worry about who scored." Before Friday, Red Boiling Springs' last victory was Aug. 29, 1986, when the Bulldogs defeated Cannon County 22-13. The Bulldogs' losing streak was thought to be the second longest in the nation, but officials with the National Federation of State High School Association said they do not keep track of such things. Dixon said the losing streak was not the fault of the players.

"It was a small school playing big schools," he said. "We were playing schools we shouldn't have been playing." Dixon started coaching the Bulldogs after they had 29 straight losses. "I've told them we have to take each game one at a time. Just like the hard work we've done in the past, we're going to have to keep doing it," Dixon said. "But I bet the kids will practice harder and play harder." chie 5-12, Riemersma 2-10, Foster 34.
