Not the greatest golfers never to play in the Ryder Cup. And certainly not CBS, which wants a nail-biting finish tomorrow. None of the brains or money behind this effort to match the fun and frenzy of the Ryder Cup wanted the United States to take a T2-2'j lead over the International team yesterday. But that's what they got What they also got was a reminder of the lesson learned so often in the Ryder Cup: This format, with four-ball and foursome competition played as match play, produces fun, free-wheeling golf. "Birdies were flying around so fast I felt like I was in a duck blind," said American Jim Gallagher who teamed with John standings but by the number of birdies there have been," U.S.

co-captain Paul Azinger said after the four-ball play. The four-ball match of Davis Love and Fred Couples against Bradley Hughes and Price had 12 birdies and an eagle in the first 15 holes. "It was a tough day, but there was a lot of good golf played," Price said after he and Mark McNulty halved their afternoon foursome match with Love and Gallagher. "I'm a little disappointed to be so far behind," Price said, "but we can do tomorrow what the Americans did today." To show how good the Americans were, the worst round by an American team on the front nine of the morning four-ball, or better-ball, play was a 4-under-par 3Z, by Phil Mickelson and Tom Lehman. Jay Haas and Scott Hoch shot 31, the teams of Corey Pavin-Jeff Maggert and Huston-Gallagher each shot 30, and Love-Couples birdied seven of the first nine holes and shot 29.

"We all got off to great starts," Couples said. "Nick (Price) was a little off, meaning he was hitting his 7- and 8-irons to 20 feet instead of to 2 feet, but then he started going." Haas and Hoch were the dominant team of the day, winning their four-ball match 6 and 5 and their foursome match 4 and 3, making birdies on 14 of the '28 holes they played. Associated Press in the afternoon for the International team, which lost the first two matches to go down 7-0 before salvaging two wins and a tie in the final three. There are still 22 more points at stake 10 in today's four-ball and foursome play and 12 in tomorrow's individual matches. "We felt like our guys were playing well going in and they've proven it, not so much by the Huston in four-ball to birdie six holes on the front nine, including the last five.

The day started nearly two hours late because of fog but nearly ended earty when the U.S. team swamped the foreigners on the first nine holes of four-ball play and took all five morning matches, holding off an International charge led by Nick Price. Jim Thome hit his 27th, Kenny Lofton his 15th and Sandy Alomar his 17th. Alas, the victory did not move the Tribe closer to the Chicago White Sox, who defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-1 behind Frank Thomas' two doubles. The White Sox still are four games ahead in the American League Central. Elsewhere in the mythical majors, the Houston Astros took over sole possession of first in the National League Central with a 6-0 victory over San Francisco. Note: Just for fun during the baseball strike, what follows is a computer simulation of how Major League Baseball would be if there was no strike.

It was prepared by STATS with the help of three computer baseball companies, The Cleveland Indians flexed their muscles yesterday, slugging four home runs to put away the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 at Jacobs Field. The heavy hitting dovetailed nicely with Charles Nagy's pitching. Nagy held the Jays to seven hits in pitching a complete game to move his record to 13-9.
