4C RENO WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2002 Shelter a U.S Forest Service overhaul of its existing travel plan for the mountain, senior planner Arlo Stockham said. The city also can ask the county commission to declare the public lands surrounding the neighborhood a congested area, which would prohibit firearm use. But the council stopped short of recommending closure of access points in the neighborhood, saying it could cause the same problems in other Gunfire FromIC "The recreational vehicle use is driving people nuts. You buy a home in northwest Reno and set yourself in that war zone line. "The city has an obligation to protect me as a homeowner and to protect my neighbors.

There are homes there now and that is not an appropriate activity." The council, however, can do little other than ask staff to write a resolution supporting Calkins' requests to the Washoe County Commission and the U.S. Forest Service, which have jurisdiction over the land. In a 6-0 vote, the council directed city staff to make recommendations at a future council meeting on what it can do to help. "I don't want anyone to think that we are avoiding a clear public need here," Mayor Jeff Griffin said. "But this is not in our jurisdiction." City staff has been involved in as a police horse barn.

Staff recommended the city negotiate which government would be responsible for the estimated $185,000 it would cost to transfer the property to the county. The equipment that would be given to the county is worth $219,000. The $200,000 in the city's animal shelter fund also would be given to the county. The city would continue to run the existing shelter until the new one is complete. Under the agreement, the city would not be reimbursed for a $10,000 consultant study on the costs of a new shelter.

plain the existing animal center is not well-built or well-ventilated, allowing diseases to spread easily among animals. As part of the preliminary agreement, Reno would turn over the land and existing building to the county. The city's animal control employees would be transferred to the county and the city's equipment and venicles used for animal control would be given to the county. The Longley Lane site and building is worth $1.4 million. If the city gave the site to the county, it would not be able to use the extra land for future needs, such of solvent pollution, a possibility which in 1 995 led to creation of the county-run remediation district that will collect the fees.

Efforts thus far have focused on treating water supplies from five public wells that contain high levels of PCE. With money from the new fees, the county can begin to actually correct the pollution problem, officials said. Any delay in attaching increased fees to this year's property tax would in turn delay cleanup efforts for another year, said Jim Ford, a hydrogeologist with the remediation district. FromIC The Humane Society would sell its building and raise $2,5 million for its share of a new 5 1 building. The tax hike would support a $10.7 million bond for the rest of construction.

City and county officials are to review the proposed agreement again at a joint meeting on June 1 8. Then a final agreement would be adopted next spring if voters approve the tax measure. Many animal advocates com Corvette FromIC more than 600 vendors are signed up for the nine-day festival starting Aug. 3 that showcases cars and music of the '50s and '60s. "I would expect to have much more people than we had last year, and that's good for Reno," Saville said.

"We're bringing people in from 38 states this year, and three provinces in Canada. It certainly is a nationally-acclaimed event." The new Corvettes were designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company, which began in 1952. Corvette's first car was a 1953 model, released in the last quarter of 1 952. The 50th Anniversary Special Edition cars will have special wheels, insignias, aint, interior and wheels, said ack Stanko, owner of Champion Chevrolet in Reno. Visitors will be able to have tneir pictures taken next to the 2003 Corvette, which will be on display every day of the festival. The debut will be the kickoff for the National Corvette Caravan tour, which will travel around the country until it gets to Nashville, next year for an anniversary celebration, according to a press release. Hot August Nights will be the only place where people will be able to take a photo with the car this year, since it will not be displayed between Reno and Nashville, Saville said. Walter said the debut puts Hot August Nights more securely into the category of a national event. "It adds a lot of credibility," he said.

Reno resident Snirley Canale said residents within the contaminated area are being singled out for a cost that should rightly be spread among all water users. "We are no more to blame for the water contamination than anyone else in the county," Canale said. "Why should we be assessed a higher fee when we are not the guilty party?" Fees collected outside the contaminated area will decrease slightly. The fees are based on water consumption, but are attached to property taxes. Water rates charged by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority and other Washoe County water purveyors will be unaffected. Car and Driver magazine reported Chevrolet plans to make as many as 10,000 of the burgundy 50th-Anniversary Special Edition cars, depending on demand.

But Stanko said he got a tentative allocation report stating the company plans to make far fewer, between 4,000 and 5,000 of the special editions out of about 30,000 Corvettes next year. "Just to give you an idea of how limited the special edition is going to be, we're only going to get four the first half of the year," he said. "There are actually 4,200 Chevrolet dealers in the United States, so some dealers are probably only going to get one for the year." Stanko said he has no idea what the car will cost, but said most will be bought as an investment, not for transport. The unveiling is scheduled for 1 0:30 a.m. Aug.
