Many followed in the steps of former Reno mayor John Chism and enjoyed jitterbug-ging. Several persons remarked that it was a nostalgic evening. Wilma Winters had a wistful, nostalgic look in her eyes as she danced.

If the dancers were filled with nostalgia there was even more nostalgia for this columnist, especially when James played the songs which Betty Grable had sung. During the thirties I had played in shorts with Betty Grable musical movie shorts, that is. That was prior to her marriage to Harry James. We were the same age then but after attaining stardom Miss Grable suddenly became much younger. In a highly awarding appearance, the Gloria String Quartet entertained and educated pupils of the Agnes Risley School in Sparks as part of the Young Audiences of Northern Nevada concert series.

There were 725 pupils in attendance at the two performances, said principal Ted Lokke. Leader Gloria Isaeff compared the size of her violin to the slightly larger viola of Werner Siepenkothen and the much larger cello of Jeanne Siepenkothen. "The smaller the instrument the higher it is," said Mrs. Isaeff in reference to pitch. "The bigger the instrument the lower it is." With the inclusion of violinist Jack Beck the quartet illustrated sound variations and how to build a string quartet.

Mrs. Siepenkothen demonstrated how the use of the mute on the bridge of her cello made the sound softer. The quartet also demonstrated plucking strings with fingers or pizzicato, which was innovated by the great Italian musician, Claudio Monteverdi, more than three centuries ago. The musicians performed "Boisterous Bouree" in rapid tempo and genuinely uplifting spirit of joy. Numerous Nevadans have a personal interest in the flicker because they worked in it as extras and bit players back in August and September of 1972. This columnist spent a day with the Universal Studios company gathering material for a story for the Nevada State Journal. The shots of Genoa's Holly Nutter in the swing took two hours to film but only two minutes to show on the screen. That was also true of the pathetic scene between Woody Parfrey and John Vernon at the James Canyon Ranch north of Genoa which is now owned by Harvey Gross. "Charlie Varrick" is a high budget picture so director Don Siegel could take his time with numerous long and medium shots, close-ups, dolly shots and panoramic shots from various angles.

Then Siegel and his staff intelligently pruned the extraneous material. Genoa, the oldest settlement in Nevada, was transformed into Tres Cruces, N.M. with sign changes. The facade of the Genoa Museum had signs saying "Tres Cruces Western Fidelity Bank of New Mexico." The shots of Reno, were not camouflaged, however, because they actually represent Reno in the film's story. There are shots of the Truckee River, Imperial Restaurant, Arlington Towers, and the Mapes, Riverside and Ponderosa hotels.

There are interesting and colorful scenes of Genoa, rolling sage-covered hills of Carson Valley, the gigantic backdrop of the Sierras and wild flowers blooming near streams. Unfortunately, the film is PG rated and not recommended for pre-high school students. There were no doubt tremendous physical demands placed upon Walter Matthau as Charley Varrick with his action-packed scenes. No double was discerned. To stay in condition he exercises every day.

We saw him on Highway 27 with his 10-year-old son, Charlie. They ran and walked half way to Minden and back. Young Charlie is also in the film. Joe Conforte of Mustang is comfortable portraying himself as is Tad Dunbar, former Reno television newscaster. Trumpter Harry James summoned many of the dancing elite to his "Dance to the Tune of the Forties" function given as a benefit for the Washoe Association for Retarded Children in the coliseum.

The handsome man made his horn ripple with the clarity and richness that ranks among the best of the seventies as well as the forties. As the band sailed through many of the oldies some dancers were seen doing mod steps Coming Dec. 3 LOU STILES I I Z2L eUDORcTDO HOTEL CASINO Fourth and Virginia Streets Downtown Reno mvAii NOW APPEARING in the TOPAZ ROOM Films "El," directed by Luis Bunuel, Nov. 27, 8 p.m., Thompson Engineering University of Nevada.
