0 silage 0) 0 D) DC i JSSll By FOSTER CHURCH Remember "Charlie Varrick," the Walter Mattbau film about a small time bank robber who gets Involved with the Mafia and which was shown in Gardnerville and Reno in July of '72? Universal personnel aren't talking about the reason for the delay in its release, but last Saturday night at the 2nd Annual Elko Film Festival, "Charley Varrick" was premiered and it looks like it was worth the delay it should be one of the biggest films of the year. The footage of-Reno and environs is striking with lots of handsome color shots of the Truckee meadows. The acting, particularly Matthau's is excellent, the script witty and, the stunt work prodigious. In what other movie can you see an ancient bi-plane chased by a Ford across the desert, and finally toppling head over tails in a junk yard? The film is violent and bloody much too violent for some tastes, and in its present cut there may be some ratings problems. Reno settings include the Imperial Restaurant, Arlington Towers and long stretches of S.

Virginia Street. Look hard. You're probably in it. The 2nd Annual Elko Film Festival, incidentally, promises to be one of the most unique events of its kind in the country. Despite a few hitches, the 20 or so production people invited to Elko by the Nevada Dept.

of Economic Development, were able to at least make contacts which is a start for increased filmmaking in Nevada. Ia Sunday morning's paper this writer quoted a Hollywood production manager who explained his own presence, saying that "Gov. (TCaHaghaa called Howard Hughes, Hughes called Perry Lieber and Perry Lieber called me." According to Bob Goodman of the Nevada Dept of Economic Development the route was less complicated. Lieber, an ex director cf publicity at 20th Century Fox and now manager of the Landmark Hotel in Las Vegas, generously made all the contacts, without a word from the Governor or Hughes. Kings Castle has new prospective owners and a new entertainment policy as well.

The new Entertainment Director, Paul Lowdea, is shooting for big names in the Camelot theatre on weekends. Last weekend he cornered Marty Allen and Roberta Sherwood and for the first two weekends in October, he has The Limeliters with Glenn Yarbrough, in show now titled "Reunion 73." Their concert in Reno two weekends ago apparently paid off. At that time, Yarbrough said he hoped to secure about 10 weeks of bookings in Nevada and spend the rest of his time aboard his boat, sailing around the world. Also cornered for the Jesters' cturt, opening Oct. 9 is '50s star Bobby Rydell.

Lowden is a Vice President of the Hacienda Hotel in Las Vegas, a property of Kings Castle buyer Alan Glick. Lowden was formerly musical director of the Flamingo Hilton. Bad news for lounge lovers. The Sahara Tahoe's Juniper Lounge, one of the best in the area, will be no more after Nov. 1.

It's being torn out to expand the casino and will be relocated further back in the building. Sahara Tahoe Entertainment Director Pat France emphasizes that it's not an economy move and that the new lounge will continue at the same level. All of the old Sahara Tahoe lounge contracts have expired though and there may be a change in seme of the acts to play there. Holiday shows in Reno niteries are already being firmed up. Harrah's, Tahoe has Carroll O'Connor for four days over Thanksgiving and will bring in the Peggy Fleming Ice Show for Christmas and New Years.

At the Sahara Tahoe, Diana Ross will fill the bill and The Lennon Sisters have been signed for the New Years Show at the Nugget. Area entertainment favorite Sloopy just finished putting together a new act with some new Red Barons. at an area nitery having problems with their bookings there. Other major clubs look down their noses at the place and are reluctant to book even old regulars if they also appear there. are being hissed and heroines cheered at the weekend shows at Reno's Catholic Church of the Little Flower.

The shows are of professional calibre and beer is served something like, a vaudeville pops concert. Lively Composer: Buck Owens headlines with his lively county show at the Nugget. Featured are Susan Raye, Buddy Alan, La-wanda Lindsey and Don Rich and the Buckaroos. Jud Sfrunk, composerentertainer whose "Daisy a Day" has enjoyed a long stay at the top of the music charts, is sharing the showbill with Eddy Arnold at Harrah's Headliner Room through Oct. 3.
