Gordon Gayle The retired Marine brigadier general, who received the Navy Cross for leadership and bravery during the assault on Peleliu, one of the bloodiest and most complex and controversial battles fought by Marines in World War II, has died. He was 95. Gen. Gayle died April 21, 2013, at an assisted-living facility in Farnham, after suffering a stroke, according to the Marine Corps.

As an officer with the 1st Marine Division, he led troops in five key battles in World War II, starting with Guadalcanal in 1942, where Marines, after weeks of fierce jungle fighting, stopped the advance of Japanese troops toward Australia. From news services Bernard Waber The author of such children's favorites as "The House on East 88th Street" and "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" has died at his home in New York. Publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt said in a statement Monday that Mr. Waber died Thursday (May 16, 2013) at his home in Long Island after a long illness. He was 91.

Mr. Waber made his debut as an author in 1962 with "The House on East 88th Street." The book introduced readers to the lovable Lyle, first spotted in a bathtub in an Upper East Side brownstone. Lyle's story continued in "Lyle Finds His Mother," "Lyle and the Birthday Party" and other works. The publishing company said Mr. Waber's 33 books had sold 1.75 million copies.

Maureen Dunn The woman who became a chief advocate for MIAs died May 10 (2013) at a rehabilitation center in West Roxbury, said her son, Joseph Dunn II. She had cancer and was 72. Mrs. Dunn lost her husband on Feb. 14, 1968.

Her husband, Navy pilot Joseph Dunn was simply lost missing in action when his unarmed A-l Skyraider was shot down over the South China Sea. Over time, her campaign and similar ones across the country gained momentum. In 1970, when Mr. Manzarek died Monday (May 20, 2013) at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, Manzarek surrounded by his family. He had bile duct cancer.

Mr. Manzarek founded the Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The band went on to become one of the most successful rock'n' roll acts to emerge from the 1960s and continues to resonate with fans decades after Morrison's death in effect ended the band. Bob had several relatives on the west coast and was cared for by his cousin Cindy Boquist. Bob was a graduate of Parkway North High School in St. Louis and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Bob had a long and distinguished career with A. G.

Edwards as a Project Manager Analyst. Bob was very giving and donated his time to soup kitchens and delivering meals to those in need. He loved gardening, golfing, and traveled whenever the opportunity arose. He was also an avid reader and a dedicated sports fan attending games of the St. Louis Rams and Cardinals whenever possible.
