TV Week, November 14-20, 1999 Reno Gazstte-Journal 18 Unglued From the Tube Learning an unglamdrous lesson about war personal history, as did the hero-gg ines of the Dear America series. -Read The Winter of Red Snovp' The Revolutionary War Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart by Kristianaj Gregory. JJ By Diana Dawson TVData Features Syndicate Compassion and kindness take over as 16-year-old Abigail Stewart learns that the harsh realities of war in Valley Forge differ greatly from the romance and glamour she expected. Through her diary, young Abby (Elizabeth Rosen) offers an honest look at the Revolutionary War in Dear America: The Winter of Red Snow. The sixth half-hour Dear America special, which premiered on HBO Family, airs Monday, Nov.

15, on HBO. Each Dear America installment tells the tale of a historical period through the fictional diary of a strong young woman of the period. The programs are based Scholastic's Dear America book series. With the beating of drums and the shrill sound of fifes, the Stewarts hear George Washington's troops arrive in Valley Forge during a snowstorm to mend themselves over the long winter. Far from the crisp and handsome young men they'd expected, they find tattered, weary and bleeding soldiers stumbling through the snow, leaving a red and sodden trail.

The Stewarts offer to help in any way they can, harvesting their crops early to feed the troops, making them shoes and coats, and taking in their laundry. Through her work, Abby meets the general's wife, Lady Washington (Catherine Disher), and accompanies her to the encampment to feed starving and suffering soldiers. There, Abby sees both courage and great pain. The battlefield horror isn't enough to keep the compassionate teen away for long. She learns that in this place where need overwhelms resources, even the smallest gesture of kindness leaves an indelible impression.
