Moving forward with Hollis: The Indians took a step backward in a 63-10 shellacking at Boise State Saturday, but overall the Indians' program has moved forward in Joe Hollis' third season as their coach.

The Indians were picked to finish last in both the conference coaches and media preseason polls, but have Big West wins over North Texas and Louisiana-Lafayette, which was designated as a conference game because Arkansas State couldn't schedule New Mexico State. The 52-year-old Hollis was a veteran Division I assistant before taking the Indians' job. He was the Ohio State Buckeyes' offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1996 after joining the Buckeye staff in 1991 Hollis, who also was an assistant at Georgia, Tulsa, Auburn and Troy (Ala.) State as well as a head coach at Jacksonville (Ala.) State for one year, has pumped confidence into the Indians' program. The Indians gave a glimpse of how dangerous they can be, particularly at home, when they scared Texas Christian, a bowl game winner a year ago over Southern California, before losing to the Horned Frogs, 24-21. Fewer turnovers: Under Hollis, the Indians have made progress cutting down their turnovers. In 1 996, the season before he arrived at the school, they had 30 turnovers. That dropped to 23 in 1997 and 25 in 1998. Although they had three in the Boise State game, they've still only had 18 turnovers in 1 0 games. Lemon sweet for Indians: Junior quarterback Cleo Lemon had an off day against Boise State, completing just 8 of 23 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown, but became Arkansas State's all-time leading passer Saturday. The 6-2, 215-pound Lemon, from Greenwood, has completed 90 of 205 passes for 1 ,288 yards with seven interceptions and 1 1 touchdowns this season and has passed for 5,521 yards in his three-year career.

INSURANCE a NEVADA FOOTBALL Pack must get off the canvas By SUv Sneddon RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL After a painful punch to the bread basket, it could be a while before the air is pumped back into the Nevada football program.

Coach Jeff Tisdel and his coaches and players went back to work Sunday, trying to salvage what's left of their ill-fated season. The Wolf Pack was eliminated from the Big West Conference title race when it was decked by Idaho, 42-33, at Mackay Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Pack is 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big West after it was an overwhelming choice in a preseason conference media poll to capture the title. Nevada, which was a close second to Idaho in the conference coaches poll, was shredded by a non-conference schedule as it opened with losses to Oregon State, Colorado State, Oregon and Fresno State. The four teams are a combined 25-12 and all have qualified for bowl appearances with Fresno State at 7-3 and Oregon State, Colorado State and Oregon all at 6-3.

What can Nevada can hope to accomplish for the remainder of this season? "I thought about that a lot at home last night (Saturday). I reflected on that," said Nevada coach Jeff Tisdel. "AH we can do is keep working hard and finish on a positive note for our seniors!" The Pack plays Arkansas State, 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big West, at Jonesboro at 2 p.m. PST and then comes home for its seniors' final game against Utah State at Mackay Stadium Nov. 20.

"After the rough season we've had, it's going to be hard," Tisdel said. "We have enough pride in the core of our football team, I think we'll work hard to win the games." Tisdel isn't planning any wholesale personnel changes, basically going with the same senior-dominated starting lineup he used against Idaho. "We still want to win these games. You don't want to throw a lot of young, inexperienced players in there," Tisdel said. "We'll give some young players the opportunity to fill in the holes.

"But our first and foremost concern is to win these last two games with the best people we have." Tisdel was still baffled Sunday about his team's offensive performance, when it was held scoreless in the first half and without a yard of total offense in the second quarter and then rebounded for 33 second half points. The Pack finished with 520 yards in total offense and Idaho, helped by Nevada special team errors, finished with 378 yards. "I don't know how you can be that productive in the third quarter and not at the start (of the game)," Tisdel said. Wide receiver Trevor Insley caught 14 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback David Neill completed 22 of 38 passes for 317 yards and two TDs. Insley, who has 4,660 yards, set the NCAA Division I-A record for career receiving yardage.

He broke the previous record of 4,5 18 set by Wyoming's Marcus Harris from 1993 to 1996. Insley suffered a first quarter mild concussion, but started the second half. He is expected to be able to play against Arkansas State. With the 14 catches Saturday, Insley has 277 career receptions. He needs 19 in the last two games to break former Nevada teammate Geoff Noisy's Division I-A record of 295 receptions set from 1995 to 1998.

Insley needs 25 receptions to break the all-division record of 301 catches, which was set by the San Francisco 49ers Jerry Rice at Mississippi Valley State from 1981 to 1984. Insley still has a long shot chance at breaking the Division I-A single season receptions record of 142, which was set by Houston's Manny Hazard in 1989. Insley has 1 13 for the season and would need 30 receptions to break the Hazard mark. Neill continued his interception-free streak in the Idaho game. He hasn't had a pass intercepted in the last five games, covering 188 passes.

Neill, who has thrown for 16 touchdowns this season, has only had five intercepted. For Pack senior running back Chris Lemon, who rushed 3 1 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns and has rushed for 968 yards on 205 carries this season, the only direction for Nevada football to go is straight ahead. "We'll practice like normal. We'll get after more Ws," Lemon said. "We've just got to get these guys, especially the underclassmen, some reps.

They have to be prepared for next year." Lemon, one of seven fifth-year seniors on the Nevada team, will be gunning for his third consecutive 1 plus season. In the Idaho game, Lemon became only the third Nevada player all-time to rush for 4,000 yards in a career. Frank Hawkins, 1977-80, leads at 5,333 yards, followed by Charvez Foger, 1985-88, at 4,484 yards, and Lemon at 4,044. 0 DM PA 1 Sim- Mn (see st0re for detalls) JIllUJf 121 Vesta St Reno (behind Rapscallions) 1 05 I I lJ in the Midtowne Market 324-3683 Onen 1 lam to Mirinipht.
