And for Keith Hernandez it was also unexpected. Hernandez was one of three New York Mets selected in fan balloting to the starting team for the All-Star Game in Houston in results announced Thursday. "I've been watching this with quite a bit of interest the last 10 days," Hernandez. "I don't want to get into a lot of detail about why, but I am surprised." Hernandez was one of the players who admitted during last year's federal drug trials in Pittsburgh to using drugs. He was the only player of 21 censured by .4 fei, 1 -SCT.

Steve Howe, the one-time Los Angeles Dodger bullpen ace who has battled cocaine addiction, will likely return to the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays perhaps as early as this weekend. Howe was "very close to signing" a major league contract, San Jose Bees owner Harry Steve said Thursday. The Bees' owner, who took a chance and signed Howe to a contract after finding the 1980 National League Rookie of the Year working in a Montana radio station, said he expected Howe to be back in the majors by the weekend at the latest.

"He's very close to signing," Steve said. "I expect it to happen by the weekend if not before. Toronto executive vice-president Pat Gillick denied the club is on the verge of signing Howe. "No it's not true," said Gillick, who nevertheless confirmed the Jays spoke to Howe's agent, John Lence, a week ago. A number of teams have shown interest in Howe so far this year.

Among the most interested were the San Francisco Giants, the Chicago White Sox and the Blue Jays. "The chances are excellent that Steve will be with the Jays within a week to 10 days," said John Lence, Howe's agent, who spent the last three days in negotiations at his Montana home with Gord Ash, the Blue Jays director of player personnel. JtiTM -ISV jiMiii mm i Strawberry, who will start in the outfield beside Atlanta's Dale Murphy and San Diego's Tony Gwynn, was the leading vote-getter for the National League. "Winning the award will give me added incentive for the second half of the year to really put some numbers on the board," Strawberry said. Strawberry attracted 1,619,511 votes, most in the majors and more than 135,000 ahead of the next most popular player in the fan balloting Carter.

Also selected to the starting team were second baseman Ryne Sandberg of Chicago, shortstop Ozzie Smith of St. Louis and third baseman Mike Schmidt of Philadelphia. Strawberry was hitting .295 with 13 home runs and 45 runs batted in through Wednesday. He is the first NL player ever to start All-Star Games in his first three full seasons in the major leagues. He was named the Mid-American Conference's Player of the Year. Howard was the San Diego Padres' first pick in the June draft. Jeff King, the star Arkansas third baseman selected first in the June draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, was named college Player of the Year. In three years with Arkansas, King established five career offensive records including home runs (42) and runs batted in (204). He also had seven single-season records.

Though he has been named to the team three times previously, this will be Hernandez's first start. "This one will rank right up there with the first one (in 1979)," Hernandez said, "particularly because of the fan vote." Daniel leads Amy Benz, 21-year-old amateur Michele Redman and Silvia Ber-tolaccini on the NCR Country Club. Jan Stephenson and Betsy King headed a group of eight players at even-par 72. Nine players were still on the course when play was stopped due to darkness. "Anytime you're around par in the Open you have to feel good," said Daniel. "Overall, I'm very pleased.

There were a few putts that I missed, but there were a few that I made." Patty Sheehan, four-time Nevada Amateur champion and former University of Nevada-Reno player, shot 73 and is three strokes off the pace. After a practice round Wednesday, Daniel was attempting to return to her hotel, but a derailed train carrying phosphorus reignited, sending a large toxic cloud into the sky and forcing 30,000 nearby residents to evacuate their homes. Daniel somehow avoided police roadblocks and returned to the hotel. "Every time I came to a roadblock, luckily, I found a way to get around it. I found enough side roads to get home, but it took a while," she said.

Daniel bogeyed the first hole, missing a 3-foot putt for par, but it was to be the last of her day. She birdied No. 4 with a 40-foot putt, sank a 20-footer on No. 11 for a birdie and reached the par-5 12th hole in two and 2-putted for another birdie. Daniel, twice a runner-up in the Open, used her driver only twice, choosing her 3-wood to gain more accuracy off the tee.

"I haven't been hitting my driver really well. I can't explain it. As soon as I pull the driver from my bag I'm in the rough." son in charge of the Tigers, Bertman guided the team to a school-record 54 victories. The honorees were selected in a poll of ma jor-league scouting directors. Joining King on the Sporting News' All-America team were catcher Scott Hemond of South Florida, first baseman George Canale of Virginia Tech, second baseman Luis Alicea of Florida State and shortstop Williams.

The outfield consisted of Howard, Richie and Paul Meyers of Nebraska. The pitchers were two left-handers, Greg Swindell of Texas and Kevin Brown of Georgia Tech, and the designated hitter was Craig Cooper of Georgia. All but two members of the University of Maryland basketball team have been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury investigating the death of Len Bias, Prince George's County States Attorney Arthur Marshall said Thursday. The two exceptions are Terry Long and David Gregg, the players who were with Bias when he collapsed June 19 in his College Park dormitory room, Marshall said. Under Maryland law, Long and Gregg would be granted immunity from prosecution automatically if they were called before the grand jury.

The third man who was with Bias when he collapsed Brian Tribble will not be compelled to testify, Marshall said. "We believe that all three of them, at least at that time, are involved at the minimum in the use of drugs," Marshall told WUSA television in Washington. Marshall said he is mainly concerned with finding out how the drugs got into the university and Bias' room. Reno's Puig beats Bees SAN JOSE, Calif. "I played really good. I'm really happy." Gilmartin birdied the second hole before running into trouble on the par-5 sixth. He hit his second shot out of bounds en route to a double bogey, but managed to shake off the misfortune. "I hit my second shot out of bounds left by three inches. I didn't let it get to me," Gilmartin said.

"I just played solid. I really didn't give anyone a chance." Gilmartin recorded birdies on the eighth and 13th holes. After a bogey on the 15th, he put the tournament away with an eagle 3 on the 496-yard, par-5 17th.
