"It was ridiculous," Eckersley said. "I like to take my time," Franco said. "It takes me a long time. I step out and try to get ready." Eckersley rebounded to get ahead 0-2 on Ruben Sierra, but the reliever missed on the next three pitches.

Sierra then blasted a full-count slider off the right-field wall, pushing home the tying and go-ahead, runs. "The whole inning was irritable," Eckersley said. "With Pettis, and then Franco taking an hour to come to the plate. And then Bobby Valentine making his usual 12th appearance to the field." "We don't mean to disrupt anyone," Valentine said. the A's managed to carry a 5-2 lead into the ninth.

Eckersley struck out pinch hitter Jack Daugherty. Kevin Reimer, also pinch hitting, hit a routine grounder to shortstop Walter Weiss, but Weiss bob-bled it for an error. A fielder's choice by Jeff Huson gave Eckersley two outs, but Gary Pettis drilled a run-scoring double to left-center. Eckersley, with a 5-3 cushion, still appeared safe. But then came Rafael Palmeiro's RBI single and stolen base.

It was 5-4 Oakland, with the tying run on second. Now it was Franco's turn. Eckersley walked Franco on five pitches Eckersley's first walk in 52 innings, 185 batters but the plate appearance was a long one. Franco stepped out of the long, drawn-out inning in which Eckersley was upset at the Texas hitters and the Texas hitters were upset at Eckersley. Afterward, accusations flew through both clubhouses.

Eckersley accused the Rangers, specifically Julio Franco, of intentionally slowing the game by repeatedly stepping out of the batter's box. The Rangers, specifically Franco, accused Eckersley of quick-pitching (throwing to the plate before the batter is ready), giving the pitcher an unfair advantage. In the end, both sides were probably accurate. But only one side won. And it wasn't Eckersley or the A's.

In a sloppy game that included five errors, 12 walks and two wild pitches, By John SheaGannett News Service OAKLAND First Nolan Ryan's no-hitter. And now Dennis Eckersley's walk. The Oakland Coliseum was the site of another "event" Tuesday afternoon in Texas' 6-5 victory against Oakland, as Eckersley issued his first walk of the season, first since Aug. 15 and fourth since the 1988 World Series. "That's back-to-back amazing feats," Texas manager Bobby Valentine said.

"Two days in a row. Wow!" Eckersley's feat didn't quite excite the Coliseum crowd as much as Ryan's sixth career no-hitter did a night earlier. When Eckersley walked out to pitch the ninth, the 21,625 fans banked on an A's win and a 21st save for Eckersley. Montreal at St Louis, 5:35 p.m. I I jW. ar i i Mota AL roundup Orioles using long ball, top Brewers, 4-3 From wire service reports Mickey Tettleton tied it with a two-out home run in the ninth inning and Randy Milligan homered in the 10th Tuesday night as Baltimore beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in Cal Ripken's straight game for the Orioles.

Ripken, who went 0-for-4 and is batting .213, moved past Everett Scott into second place on the all-time consecutive games list. Lou Gehrig leads with 2,130, meaning Ripken must play every day until mid-1995 to break the record. Brewers relief ace Dan Plesac took over to start the ninth with a 3-2 lead. He retired the first two batters before Tettleton, after hitting a long drive that hooked foul, connected for his eighth home run. Milligan led off the 10th by hitting a 1-0 pitch from Plesac (0-3) for his 10th home run.

Gregg Olson (3-0) got the final out in the 10th for the victory. The Orioles won for the fifth time in six games. Milwaukee has lost six of seven. Ron Robinson made his debut with the Brewers a successful one, shutting out Baltimore on three hits for five innings. He was acquired last week in a trade with Cincinnati.

YANKEES 5, RED SOX 4 at New York Steve Balboni broke an 0-for-10 slump with a run-scoring pinch-single to snap an eighth-inning tie as New York gave Stump Merrill a victory in his managerial debut at Yankee Stadium. Dave Righetti got the last three outs for his 12th save and 200th of his career. He's only the ninth pitcher ever to reach 200 saves. Lee Guetterman (3-2) was the winner. INDIANS 7, TIGERS 3 at Detroit Chris James hit a three-run homer and Sandy Alomar got three hits, leading Cleveland.

The Indians have won three in a row after six straight losses. James capped a four-run third inning with his fourth home run of the season. Alomar walked and later scored on Jerry Browne's sacrifice fly, Tom Brookens walked and James homered. BLUE JAYS 5, TWINS 4 at Minneapolis Second baseman Fred Manrique's three-base error allowed Toronto to score two unearned runs in the seventh inning, the Twins' fifth straight loss. It was the first Metrodome victory in seven tries dating back to July 27, 1988, for Toronto.

The Blue Jays have won five of six overall and are 9-2 in their last 11 road games. The Twins have followed their best May ever (21-7) with a 2-8 start in June. MARINERS 5, WHITE SOX 2 at Seattle Randy Johnson won his third straight start and Jay Buhner hit his fifth home run of the month, leading Seattle. Johnson (6-3) yielded two runs on three hits in 6 innings. He walked five and struck out four.

ANGELS 3, ROYALS 0 at Anaheim Chuck Finley outdueled Bret Saberhagen for the second time in six days. Finley (9-4) shut out the Royals on seven hits for eight innings and Bryan Harvey got his seventh save, sending Kansas City to its eighth straight defeat. Saberhagen (5-5), a 2-1 loser to Finley and the Angels in Kansas City last Thursday, gave up 10 hits in 7V3 innings. Dave Winfield, who had three hits, doubled with two outs in the fourth and scored on Lance Parrish's double. Slumping Reds swept by Braves NL roundup From page 1D pick-up games. Guerrero, for one, is seen as a godfather of sorts because of his long career. And Mota is the designated "kid" of the group. "I'm always the catcher when we play because there aren't too many other guys who want to do it. But I learn a lot, so it's OK," Mota said.

One of the reasons Mota doesn't mind is the potential reward. "I hope to be up there in the majors with them, someday," he said. "They are always ready to give me advice and help me with my game. That's almost as good as being able to play with them." So far, Mota has proven to be an adequate student. Through 61 games, 40 of which Mota has played in, he has a .267 batting average and had gained the confidence of Reno manager Mike Brown, who said Mota handles pitchers well.

"Carlos has a strong arm and is a good hit-and-run player," Brown said. "He's a good kid. He has a good attitude and is a very hard worker. His biggest strength is his arm strength." The California League doesn't keep statistics for runners thrown out, but if it did Mota would certainly be among the leaders. A pleasant surprise has been Mota's speed.

He has nine stolen bases and is frequently involved in hit-and-runs when he's on base. Mota, in his fourth year of professional baseball, was hitting close to .300 earlier in the year. Then catcher Barry Blackwell, who was splitting time with Mota behind the plate, went down with a foot injury. Forced to catch about 90 percent of Reno's games, Mota's batting average dropped. On May 1, he was involved in a collision at home plate and injured his thumb.

A week of rest ensued, which Mota said he needed. Mota, who struggles to speak English, has had more problems assimilating to life in the United States. His solution has been to isolate himself, which he said hinders the learning process but eases the pain of adjusting. "Mostly I just sit at home or in the hotel room and watch television," Mota said. From wire service reports Greg Olson hit a grand slam and Ron Gant had two doubles, a triple and a homer as the Atlanta Braves swept Cincinnati 8-3 and 3-2 Tuesday night at Cincinnati, handing the Reds their season-high fifth straight loss.

Cincinnati has lost seven of its last eight games. The Reds were trying to rebound from a 4-7 road trip, and got a nice start by scoring three first-inning runs off Tom Glavine (3-4) in the opener. But Danny Jackson (1-2), who had won all four of his career starts against the Braves, blew the lead by letting the first six batters reach base to open the second. Olson, facing Jackson for the first time in his career, hit a 1-2 pitch into the second deck in left field for his fifth homer and a 4-3 lead. Glavine allowed seven hits and struck out five in his first complete game in 12 starts.

Gant had a pair of doubles in the opener, and led the way in the nightcap with an RBI triple in the first inning and a solo homer, his 10th, in the third off Jose Rijo (4-2). Gant was 4-for-9 in the doubleheader. Tommy Greene (1-0) got his second major league victory by allowing three hits including Ken Griffey's solo homer in five-plus innings in the nightcap. Jeff Blauser, 4-for-5 in the opener, and Dave Hollins hit a three-run homer as Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak. Howell (8-3) allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked three in eight innings before giving way to Roger McDowell.

Sil Campu-sano and Tom Herr added two-run homers. ASTROS 5, DODGERS 4 at Houston Franklin Stubbs' two-run homer highlighted a five-run first inning against his former teammates. Bill Doran, who went 4-for-4 and has reached base in eight of his last nine trips, singled to start the game and scored on Craig Biggio's double off Mike Maddux (0-1). Maddux lasted one-third of an inning as the Dodgers lost for the 1 1 th time in 1 5 games. Stubbs followed with his seventh homer.

After Ken Caminiti singled, Glenn Wilson homered, bringing on John Wetteland. PIRATES 6, CARDINALS 3 at St. Louis Neal Heaton became the National League's second nine-game winner and Bobby Bonilla had two RBI doubles. Heaton (9-1) gave up seven hits in seven innings to join Frank Viola of the New York Mets as the league's only nine-game winners while raising his career record against the Cardinals to 5-0. Bill Landrum, the fourth Pirate pitcher, got the final out for his 10th save, retiring pinch-hitter Denny Walling on a grounder.

Bonilla went 3-for-5, raising his average batting left-handed to .367 and his league-leading extra-base hit total to 34. Mike LaVal-liere also drove in two runs and Andy Van Slyke and Barry Bonds had an RBI apiece for the NL East-leading Pirates. also drove in a run in the nightcap and went 6-for-9 overall to lead the Braves' offense. GIANTS 7, PADRES 2 at San Diego San Francisco, getting three hits from Will Clark and a victory and RBI single from Don Robinson, increased its record in June to 10-1. Robinson (2-0) allowed five hits over six innings as the Giants, who moved into sole possession of third place in the National League West, continued their comeback from a dreadful start.

They have gained 6V2 games on frontrunning but slumping Cincinnati in the last nine days and are now 712 games behind. Despite the loss, the second-place Padres closed within five games of the Reds, swept by Atlanta in a doubleheader earlier Tuesday. The Giants, who battered Dennis Rasmus-sen (6-3) for 12 hits in seven innings, got solo homers from Rich Parker and Gary Carter. Benito Santiago homered for San Diego. METS 19, CUBS 8 at Chicago Kevin McReynolds hit two homers and Dave Magadan doubled his season RBI total by driving in six runs as New York took advantage of windy Wrigley Field to rout Chicago.

Magadan, who entered the game with six RBIs in 75 at-bats, went 4-for-4 as the teams combined for 37 hits. McReynolds, who had four RBIs, hit his ninth and 1 0th homers as the Mets took a 10-1 lead with the wind blowing out at 25 mph.
