2BReno Gazette-Journal Monday, December 13, 1SS2 SPORTS DIGEST Pats' snow job upsets Dolphins ait vfispv oil rste J.IZ had an opportunity to render it all trivial. The Dolphins drove to the Patriot 19-yard-line on the ensuing series, but as happened throughout the day, their offensive wheels spun in the snow that seemed to protect the precious end zone. Jets 32, Bucs 17 NEW YORK Although the final score would indicate that New York quarterback Richard Todd had a splendid afternon against Tampa Bay, he credited the Jets' defense and weather. New York won the game in 23-degree weather and a minus-5 wind-chill factor before the smallest home crowd to see a Jets' game in 18 years. "The defense loves weather like this," Todd said.

"They're not worried about the long pass. They love to see those receivers tip-toe down the field. "You win a game like this with your offensive and defensive line. I'm just glad to be with them." Todd passed for one touchdown and Freeman McNeil rushed for two more to key the offense. The Jets' defense, however, forced five Tampa Bay turnovers to snap a two-game winning streak by the Bucs.

Tampa Bay Coach John McKay simply wasn't pleased with his team's performance. "I don't think we played very well," he said. "I didn't see anything today and maybe that's a credit to the Jets and our discredit. We dug ourselves a fine hole and we couldn't dig our way out of it." Bengals 23, Browns 10 CINCINNATI Fullback Pete Johnson and quarterback Ken Anderson ran for second-quarter touchdowns and Jim Breech booted three second-half field goals. Browns safety Clinton Burrell returned an interception 14 yards for a third-quarter touchdown as Cleveland pulled to within 14-10.

But Breech kicked field goals of 44, 21 and 36 yards to seal Cincinnati's victory and give the Bengals a 5-1 record. Cleveland, 2-4, threatened to tie the game in the third quarter, but fullback Mike Pruitt fumbled inside the Bengals' 10-yard line to end the Browns' last touchdown threat. Anderson completed 18 of 28 passes for 183 yards, moving ahead of Oakland Raiders quarterback George Blanda into 14th place on the all-time passing list. New England's prison hero, page 4B By TOM VERDUCCI GNS FOXBORO, Mass. Winter whipped its white, chilling blanket over Schaefer Stadium on Sunday, creating a Neanderthal brand of football, limiting the stadium attendance to less than half capacity and, most importantly, leading to a bizarre finish and a bitter loss for the Miami Dolphins.

On a day when none of the Dolphins or New England Patriots could push the ball into the end zone, the game's most important figure, and certainly the most controversial, may have been Mark Henderson, a 24-year-old AFC stadium maintenance ROUNDUP worker. Henderson, operat- ing a snow brush vehicle, cleared a path across the slippery field just prior to a 33-yard, fourth-quarter field goal by John Smith that swept the Patriots to a 3-0 upset victory over the Dolphins, now 4-2. Prior to that appearance, Henderson's job consisted only of clearing the yard lines at 10-yard intervals. He did not precede earlier field goal attempts by Smith, who slipped on an 18-yarder and missed, and Miami's Uwe von Schamann, who kicked low on a 45-yard attempt that was blocked. But this time, with 4:45 to play and a long Patriot drive stalled at the Dolphin 16, Patriot coach Ron Meyer called time out.

"I wanted to give Smith all the time to get ready," Meyer said. "Then I remembered the machine." Meyer sent in Henderson and his snow brush on a new play: a sweep across the field. Or was it a sucker play? "That is something the officials shouldn't let happen," said Shula, who seemed more bitter about his offense's lack of production than the Henderson sweep. "But I don't plan a protest to the league office." Smith said his own snow-clearing method scraping the turf with his hands did more to provide his sure footing than the snow brush. For the Dolphins, who argued vehemently as the machine crossed the field, even the appearance of an unfair Patriot Landaluce's ashes buried at track INGLEWOOD, Calif.

The ashes of unbeaten filly sensation Landaluce, who died two weeks ago from a virus, were buried in a ceremony Sunday between races at Hollywood Park. The daughter of Seattle Slew started her racing career at the Inglewood track last July when she scored her first win. In her second start, in the Lassie Stakes, she astounded the racing world with a 21-length victory in the record time for a 2-year-old of 1:08. Attending the infield track ceremoney were trainer D. Wayne Lukas, jockey Laffit Pincay who had ridden the filly in all five of her wins, the staff of Lukas' stable and Hollywood Park officials.

Lukas was near tears during the ceremony. "She was one of a kind and her life was too short," he said. Landaluce was owned by Barry Beal and Robert French, of Midland, Texas, and reportedly was insured for between $2 and $3 million. She had been scheduled to start on the day of her death, Nov. 28, in the Hollywood Starlet and was to have followed that up with an appearance Sunday in the $810,000 Hollywood Futurity against Copelan, considered the top candidate for the Eclipse Award.

In her brief career, Landaluce had earnings of $372,365. Football Air Force running back Derek Foster clung to life Sunday following a car wreck on Friday, but hospital authorities said he was not responding and remained in critical condition. "He is not responsive at all," said nursing supervisor Sharon Costantini. Foster suffered major head injuries when the car he was driving hit an icy patch of road and struck a tree on the Air Force Academy grounds just north of Colorado Springs. He was alone in the car.

The 20-year-old academy junior moved into the starting backfield at Air Force midway through this past season and finished the regular season with 404 yards on 62 carries with seven touchdowns. Basketball South Carolina basketball Coach Bill Foster remained in stable condition Sunday after suffering what doctors called a "moderate heart attack" after his team's upset victory over Purdue Saturday night. "He spent a good night. His pulse and blood pressure and EKG are steady. He is very comfortable with no physical complaints whatsoever," said Foster's wife Shirley.

University Sports Information Director Tom Price said there had been no change in the doctors' prognosis that Foster could be in the hospital two or three weeks. "I guess that's the advantage to playing at home," Dolphin fullback Andra Franklin said. Kim Bokamper, the most vociferous of the Dolphins at the time of the incident, didn't want to talk about it after the game.

"It was definitely an advantage," said von Schamann, who attempted his kick with just a sock on to get a better feel for the ball. "I know I just get any footing." For all the excitement and controversy created by the snow job Henderson was besieged by reporters and cameras even before the game ended Miami Rr torn. mm Mls)B WHY GO SHOPPING WHEN YOU CAN GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING DURING THE HONDA HOLIDAY GIVEAWAY? In the Pack's scheme, Billy Allen is No. 1, Thompson No. 2, Mosley No.

3, Green No. 4 and Stephens No. 5. Billy Allen's No. 1 spot is most important.

As UNR's point guard, he takes the first pass, brings the ball up court and initiates offensive action. In a pamphlet titled, "Championship Basketball," Coach Allen wrote, "Our fast break after a made shot is the same as after a missed shot with only two minor adjustments. When the shot is taken, the No. 1 man's rule is to go to the foul line area. If the shot is made he runs towards the right sideline where he receives the inbounds pass from the No.

5 man." But Mannion, who finished with four steals, changed UNR's basic break strategy by pressuring Billy Allen after each Utah field goal. The Utes didn't care who received the Pack's inbounds pass, as long as it wasn't Billy Allen. Mannion's size advantage might have helped Utah accomplish its mission. He is 6-foot-7 to Billy Allen's 6-1. Billy Allen finished with 11 points and eight assists.

He made 5-of-9 shots from the floor. "The more Billy has the ball, the more problems occur," said Utah assistant coach Lynn Archibald. "I thought he (Mannion) did a good job on Billy." Archibald is familiar with UNR's offensive philosophy. He was the head coach at Idaho State, one of the Pack's Big Sky Conference rivals. Archibald, who left Idaho State after the Bengals finished with 5-9 conference record last season, was on the Utah bench with Pimm against UNR.

But he said Utah's defensive strategy was Pimm's idea. Despite Utah's success and UNR's difficulty, the game boiled down to one shot, an outside jumper that Green missed before the final buzzer. Green scored 20 points. But his final attempt bounced off the rim. "It's a game of inches," Archibald said.

"If he (Green) makes that shot, w're depressed inside the dressing room." That is probably what aggravated Coach Allen. Utah wasn't a great team. UNR could, and probably should, have won. The Utes, whose record is 3-3, certainly weren't in a class with other teams that have beaten UNR this year. Despite a season opening upset of Oregon State, Utah doesn't compare to Nevada-Las Vegas, which beat the Pack, 85-75, Thursday.

UNR shot a season-high 61.8 percent from the floor at Utah. The Utes sank 48.6 percent of their field-goal attempts. Utah's defense had no answer for Mosley, UNR's senior strong forward who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Mosley played 33 minutes, despite picking up his third foul before the second half was a minute old. UNR's consecutive losses at Nevada-Las Vegas and Utah tarnished an awsome road performance by Mosley.

He totaled 22 points and 17 rebounds against UNLV and finished the trip with 49 points and 28 rebounds.
