May Youth Center, a professional building bought and donated by the May Foundation and Dixie May.

It will become a one-stop shop for youth and family interventions, alternative education and health programs, job training and social services. The center already is home to a silk-screening business that employs young people making T-shirts for clients including Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval and Artown. Jeremy Smith, 18, who works as a printer for the operation, has been aChildren's Cabinet client since 13. The recent Sparks High School graduate plans to attend Truckee Meadows Community College in the fall. "I want to study sociology, but I also want to become a social worker so maybe I can help people like those who helped me," Smith said.

The opening of the center, near the intersection of PAID ADVERTISEMENT eight different buildings and offices, has 125 employees and a budget of more than $18 million. The first program was straight forward: help ease the student truancy problem and identify some of the reasons children ditch school. But the menu of services has morphed exponentially, becoming more intricate and diverse including child care resource development and providing family and youth interventions. "When we started, the idea of a private and public partnerships, it was unheard of," Dermody said during a lunch meeting of the past executive directors. He said it was a basic culture change for its business partners and thepublic agencies it worked with.

Humke, executive director from inception until 1987, worked with agencies to identify issues that the Cabinet could help agencies handle. Leslie came on next and defined truancy as a key issue the organization could tackle. "The police would round the kids up and bring them to us, and we would ask them why they ditched school," Leslie said. "It led to some insights as to problems the children were experiencing." After seven years and wid Fred P. Bautista Fred P.

"The center gives us a base for our caseworkers and an opportunity to work more closely with our partners," Pomi said. "The thing that makes us unique is that we take a client by the hand and get them whatever they need whether it be a ride to the doctor, an education opportunity or job training. That's our job."
