Barbara, of course, was a model airplane builder, and she also became a pilot in her late teens. D.T. became a flight instructor, and in 1941 he joined American Airlines as a commercial pilot. 1997 We Miss You, Mom Joseph Mitchell Sr. PATRIDGE 110, Earth has lost a wonderful person and Heaven has gained a beautiful soul. Joseph Mitchell Patridge, Sr. (Joe), a loving and devoted husband, adored father and grandfather, and cherished friend of so many passed away unexpectedly at his home in La Jolla, CA on Sunday, December 11, 2005. Joe, the son of Jack and Bess Patridge of San Francisco, and younger brother of John Patridge, was born on November 21, 1934 in Coalinga, CA.

Soon after his birth Joe's family settled in San Francisco where Joe enjoyed a wonderful childhood and grew to become a true "city boy" at heart. While school was certainly an important component of Joe's formative years, Joe's fondest memories of his childhood are telling jokes with friends and his brother John after playing a game of baseball or basketball, playing a game of Pedro while sharing a can of sardines and saltine crackers, or enjoying the camaraderie of friends on weekends at Russian River. These childhood bonds were the beginning of an extended series of lifelong friendships that Joe would nurture and cherish for the rest of his life. Joe spent a year at St. Ignatius High and then transferred to Lincoln High where he graduated in 1952.

Joe accepted an athletic scholarship to the Univ. of Nevada, Reno, where he played both football and basketball and developed lifelong friendships. Never one to turn down a good time or the opportunity to meet new friends, Joe was also an active member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Most important, however, it was in his spring semester freshman English class that Joe met the love of his life, Virginia (Ginny) Coleman. This meeting sparked a love affair that would last over 53 years.

Joe and Ginny were married in their senior year on March 23, 1956. Soon thereafter, Joe graduated with a B.A. in Psych. and a minor in English. Shortly after graduating from college, Joe received a commission with the US Navy and began his training at the Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL.

In 1957, he was stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego with fighter squadron VF121. Several years later he transferred to Moffett Naval Air Station and a tour of duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard with fighter squadron VF191, which traveled to Singapore after a good will visit to Bombay, India. After an honorable discharge, he was recalled to active duty during the Berlin build-up, this time with air anti-submarine squadron VS872. After his 2nd tour of duty, he was again honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant. While stationed at Miramar, Joe and Ginny took up residence in the beautiful seaside village of La Jolla, the birthplace of their first son, Joseph Mitchell Patridge, Jr.

(Mitch). From the early 1960's through 2002 Joe had many exciting and interesting career moves and travel adventures. In 1960 Joe made the leap from the Navy to become a stockbroker and then to the field of high tech joining Fairchild Semiconductor as a Sales Engineer. He moved his family from La Jolla to Palo Alto, then to Berkeley, and finally settled in Menlo Park. The next eight years at Fairchild Semiconductor would not only prove fortunate to Joe, but the experience and friendships developed during this time would shape the beginnings of what was to become a successful and rewarding career in global sales and sales management in the semiconductor industry.

These next years, Joe and Ginny proudly announced the addition of three beautiful children: their first daughter, Britton Lee Patridge in 1961, a second son, Scott Coleman Patridge, in 1965, and a second daughter, Paige Dolores Patridge, in 1969. In the mid 60's Fairchild Semiconductor transferred Joe to So. CA and the family moved to Newport Beach. In 1968, Joe left Fairchild to co-found I.M.E.C., one of the first maquiladoras, in Mexico. At I.M.E.C Joe was responsible for domestic and international sales paving the way for a lifetime of managing the global sales and marketing efforts for a number of semiconductor manufacturers.

This was also the perfect opportunity for the family to move back to La Jolla, their favorite city by the sea. It was then that Joe and Ginny decided to build the house of their dreams in La Jolla shores and subsequently joined the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, a club that would soon become the family's "home away from After selling his interest in I.M.E.C., Joe decided to take the family on an adventure and accepted the position of General Manager with A.M.I. in Tokyo, Japan. For several years the family enjoyed touring Japan as well as many other countries in the Far East. The family returned to La Jolla, and subsequently moved to Saratoga, CA after Joe accepted the position of Worldwide Sales Manager for Synertek Semiconductor in the Silicon Valley.

By the early 1980's, Joe longed to return to the beautiful shores of La Jolla, and accepted the position of Worldwide Sales Manager for Brooktree Corp. in San Diego. After a number of years at Brooktree, Joe ventured off to form Spinnaker Sales and then retired a few years later. Joe was enjoying retired life playing golf at Fairbanks Ranch C.C., going to the beach, playing tennis at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, and traveling with his wife Ginny. Joe came out of retirement in 1998 when he was offered a Managing Director position with Maxim Integrated Products.

In this role Joe was responsible for European sales and marketing. This new position also allowed Joe and Ginny to fulfill a lifelong dream of living in England and traveling throughout Europe. After leaving Maxim Joe took time off to travel, visit with friends, work on his tennis and golf games, and enjoy the company of his 5 grandchildren. In 2002 Joe was approached to help found San Diego based ClarIDy RFID, again as their Worldwide Sales Manager. Joe is survived by his loving wife Ginny Patridge, his sons Mitch Patridge and wife Cammy, Scott Patridge, daughters Britton Buss and husband Paul, Paige Farmer and husband Andy, and five beautiful grandchildren, Taylor, Skylar, Olivia, Brandon, and Collin and his brother John Patridge of Stockton, CA, his Aunt Patsy McCulloch of San Rafael, CA, and many close cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joe loved life and he loved people, but most of all he loved his family; he enjoyed playing tennis with his friends and had a special passion for golf. He followed the stock market daily, and greatly enjoyed sharing his quick wit and captivating stories with friends and family. He is best remembered by his integrity, charm, quick wit, captivating personality, wonderful sense of humor, and zest for living and laughter. He was a mentor to many; loved by all. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

It is these fond memories of Joe that will live forever in our hearts. A private military service will be held a at Fort Rosecrans in Joe's honor. A celebration of his life will be held at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Jan. 7, followed by a reception at the Church. All family and friends are invited to attend.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Univ. of CA Regents, for the establishment of a memorial bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean dedicated to the memory of Joe Patridge. The memorial bench will be located on the UCSD campus just south of the pier, overlooking the La Jolla Shores and the Pacific Ocean. Please make your tax deductible gift to: UC Regents (please note that the donation is for the Joe Patridge Memorial Fund), and send your check to the attn of: John Evey, UCSD, 9500 Gilman Drive, MC 0210, La Jolla, CA 92093-0210.
