4D Reno Gazette-Journal Wednesday, March 21, 1990 heavyweight has 'Rocky' aspirations A long time ago, I knew I wanted to be a pro boxer, so I have no problem to concentrate on boxing Yuri VaulinSoviet boxer By Richard FinnGannett News Service NEW YORK While his "comrades" listed pursuits such as watching American movies, listening to heavy metal rock music, reading or meeting U.S. girls as free-time diversions from training, heavyweight Yuri Vaulin appears to be taking an all-business approach about his entry into professional boxing. On the media information sheet, he listed his boxing aspiration to "be a millionaire." "A long time ago I knew I wanted to be a pro boxer, so I have no problem to concentrate on boxing," Vaulin said Tuesday at a press conference designed to introduce the five Soviet boxers, who are scheduled to make their nation's American pro debuts next Tuesday on a a nationally televised show from Bally's Reno. Vaulin will headline the card with a six-round bout against Sim Warrier (2-3). watching him spar with highly regarded Donovan "Razor" Ruddock and former contender Mitch Green.

He said he came away impressed with Vaulin's work habits and fighting instincts, honed through a 15-year amateur career. "He has watched 400 trillion (Muhammad) Ali tapes, so he trys to emulate him as much as he can. He gets in and out and has a great jab." But Ali dancing and looking pretty is not Vaulin's objective, which delights Gallagher. "He looks to kill you. He understands the idea of the game is to destroy the other guy and get out as quick as possible.

The 1987 European champion's main weapon is a right, left, right hook combination. "He has an unbelievable work ethic," Gallagher said. "He separates the outside of the ring from the inside of the ring. It is just wind him up and send him out there." Hollywood scripted story of "Rocky" movies in the not-so-distant past. And while the 6-4, 208-pounder appears to have been lifted from the movies, the idea of him contending or even winning the world heavyweight title is no fairy tale to veteran trainer Tommy Gallagher.

"With the right amount of time and work, in 18 months he could be champion of the world," the New York native said. Having spent the last 25 years in gyms and corners with a host of past or present champions among them Doug DeWitt, Donny Lalonde and Mike McCallum Gallagher is no boxing rookie. He was with the heavyweight the past six weeks in nearby Yonkers, In four-rounders are lightweight Sergei Artemiev against Juan Al-dape (1-1), his featherweight brother Alexander against Robert Sandoval (1-1) and junior welterweight Igor Ruzhnikov against Arturo Obregon (no record). Middleweight Victor Egorov, who already has fought professionally in Europe, will meet an as-yet undetermined foe in a six-round bout. Buoyed by a 227-30 amateur record, Vaulin is not modest.

"If I didn't want to be champion I wouldn't be here," the 26-year-old said. "I think it will take one year to become in real shape to fight the top fighters."
